Flags Pick Up Two Big Points Against the Comets
Final Score:  Kingsville - 5   Mooretown - 6
by Deb Lawrence

It was a small crowd of 115 that took in this game of the 5-11-1 Kingsville Comets who play out of the South Division and the 8-4-1 home town Flags.  The crowd may have been small but there were some vocal pockets to be found if one wandered around the rink.  Also in attendance was a siren that went off as the Flags took to the ice at the beginning of each period as well as for each goal and some nifty saves by winning goaltender Mason Kalus. Taking the loss for the Comets was Mike Touma.

In the first period the Flags got early possession of the puck and took advantage of the Comets having a shortened bench by one as Alex McFadden of Kingsville was assessed a 10 minute misconduct to begin the game.  Mooretown got on the board first with a goal off the stick of Mike Berry who picked up a big rebound and fired it home.  Picking up assists were Spencer Lightfoot and Cody Chute at the 8:41 mark.  A high sticking penalty sent Ryan Rodger of the Comets to the sin bin and the Flags took all of 19 seconds in taking a two goal lead.  Notching the marker was Cody Chute with helpers from Jeff Paulley and Adam Teschke.  Heading to the showers early for a checking from behind minor (and a game misconduct) was Jeff Paulley of the Flags so his minor was served by team mate Spencer Lightfoot.  Mooretown had a couple of short-handed chances during this penalty which took place with 2:13 remaining but on one attempt Adam Teschke elected to just dump the puck in and head to the bench for fresh legs.  Shots on goal:  Kingsville - 12   Mooretown - 19. The Comets were 0 for 1 with the man advantage and the Flags were 1 for 1 on the power play this period.

In the second frame there was a short delay as the ice required a bit of maintenance by the officials who then pronounced the surface as good to go.  The Flags went on the power play again when Dave Cimino took a hooking minor at the 3:48 mark and the teams played four a side for a short while until Aaron Schieman completed serving his high sticking minor which ended at the 4:34 mark.  Just 36 seconds later Adam Little potted the third Mooretown goal with assists picked up by Aaron Schieman and Cody Chute.  The play began with the puck behind the Flags own goal, a quick couple of passes and a save made on the initial shot on goal before Little let it go from the slot.  Then the Comets began to chip away at the three goal lead the Flags had built.  It began with a high sticking minor at 5:48 that put Jordan Pennesi in the sin bin.  Adam Teschke had a great chance at a short-handed marker when he took a pass at center ice but couldn't put a handle on it as he skated over the blue line and coughed up the puck.  With two seconds left on the PP, Dave Cimino opened the scoring for the Comets with an assist to Ryan Knell.  Trimming the Flag's lead down to one at 13:22 was Kenny Gerard from Alan Beausoliel.  Mooretown got a bit of a scare while their team was on the PP as the Comets had a 2 on 1 short-handed breakaway but the shot went high.  It also appeared that the Flags had scored on the same man advantage but the whistle finally went to signal the net off but not before the Comets goaltender took a puck off the mask, lost his stick and still managed to come up with a couple of big saves.  With 40 seconds remaining in the period Aaron Schieman of Mooretown was called for hooking so the Comets began the third period with the man advantage.  Shots on goal:  Kingsville - 14/26   Mooretown - 11/30.  The Comets were 1 for 2 with the man advantage (and one still to enjoy in the 3rd) and Mooretown was 1 for 4 on the power play this period.

The third period saw the lead change hands a couple of times and the Flags spending more time in their defensive end.  The Comets made good on the PP that carried over from the second period taking 34 seconds to tie the game at three each.  Scoring the goal was Adam Hughes from Ryan Rodger.  Just under three minutes later the Comets took the lead for the first time in the game on a Ryan Knell marker with an assist to Kenny Gerard.  The Flags responded with one on an unassisted goal at 4:46 by Donny Bowling and the game was notched at four apiece.  The Flags regained the lead at 7:09 as Donny Bowling lit the lamp red for the home town fans. Picking up assists were Steve Mercier and Jordan Pennesi. Not to be outdone the Comets tied the game once again a Troy Hill marker at 11:33 with assists going to Ryan Rodger and Ryan Knell.  Kingsville had a great chance to take the lead as Ryan Rodger stepped out of the sin bin at the 15:43 mark and accepted the puck that had been chipped up to him from a team mate in their own end.  He went in alone on goal by Kalus came out and made a successful poke check to clear the puck to the boards.  As frequently happens, when a goalie makes a good/great save at one end his team then goes down to the other end and frequently something happens and in this case it did.  Scoring what proved to be the game winner at the 16:13 mark was Tyler Fraser with assists to Cody Chute and Adam Teschke.  A couple of tilts took place during the final two minutes of the game with the first as a result of some scrum in the crease of the Flags' goaltender.  With 1:15 remaining the Comets took a time out with the faceoff deep in their own end.  Once play resumed, the Touma was back in net but not for long as he was pulled from net for an extra attacker once the Comets had possession of the puck in their offensive end and with about 50 seconds remaining in the period.  While attempting to clear the puck out of their own end, the Flags once again iced the puck and with 36.3 a crucial face off took place in Mooretown's end, just to the right of Kalus.  Shortly after the faceoff, Adam Teschke got possession of the puck and got off a shot as he fell to the ice - the shot missed wide on the long side.  The second tilt came with 1.3 seconds remaining and since the Kingsville player was called for instigator, Mooretown had a very brief power play chance to finish the game.  Shots on goal: Kingsville - 15/41   Mooretown - 13/43.  The Comets were 1 for 2 with the man advantage this period and were 2 for 5 in the game.  The Flags were 0 for 2 on the power play this period and were 2 for 7 in the game.

Three Stars:
1st - Cody Chute (MRT) -- 1g 3a
2nd - Mason Kalus (MRT) -- 36 saves, 5GA
