Flags Go Two-for-Two against the Comets This Week
Final Score:  Kingsville - 3   Mooretown - 5
by Deb Lawrence

It was a crowd of 201 that took in the back half of a home-and-home series between these two this week with the Flags taking both contests.  In goal for the Comets was Mike Touma and between the pipes for the Mooretown win was John Cruse.

The first period was rather quiet with both teams getting power play time and trading goals. Kingsville opened the scoring at 4:41 on a Darrel Heyink marker from Ryan Knell and Brad Quinlan.  With Heyink in the sin bin for elbowing at 17:14 the Flags took just 42 seconds to tie the game with a power play goal.  Lighting the lamp red was Spencer Lightfoot with assists picked up by Aaron Schieman and Elliott Lewis.  The Comets outshot the visiting Flags 16 to 8 and were 0 for 1 with the man advantage this period.  Mooretown was 1 for 2 on the power play.

The second stanza was similar to the first in that the teams trades goals once again. However a few more penalties were taken and a couple of 10 minute misconducts were handed out to a couple of players who seemed to want to step up their roughing minors to something more - like fighting majors - but it didn't happen.  Mooretown opened the scoring to take the lead for the first time in the game and it took all of nine seconds to do so. Notching the goal was Steve Mercier with the lone assist going to Donny Bowling.  The Flags took a couple of minors before the period was five minutes old and successfully killed them off.  Kingsville tied the game back up with a goal at 7:13 that was off the stick of Patrick Lomascolo from Darrel Heyink and Brad Quinlan.  With under seven minutes to go in the period, Kingsville took three minors, the final one with just 36 seconds remaining in the period which meant that the Flags began the third period with the man advantage.  Each of the teams put 10 shots on net so the totals for 40 minutes of play was Kingsville 26 to 18 for Mooretown.  Both teams went 0 for 3 with the man advantage this period.

This final 20 minutes of play looked very similar to the second period in that the lead exchanged hand and a goal was scored early.  Regaining the lead for the home team at the 3:04 mark was Patrick Lomascolo with assists to Carl Florence and Brad Quinlan. Interference was the call at 5:42 that put Brent Nix of Kingsville in the sin bin and the Flags said thank you very much and answered with their second power play of the game.  Scoring the goal at 6:38 was Jeff Paulley with assists going to Jordan Pennesi and Steve Mercier. The teams then took turns sitting out minors in the sin bin but nothing came as a result of teams enjoying the man advantage.  At the 17:56 mark Adam Little scored an unassisted marker to give Mooretown the lead - it would prove to be the game winner.  With about a minute left to play, Kingsville pulled their goaltender for an extra attacker in hopes of getting the equalizer but instead gave up an empty net goal to Donny Bowling while Steve Mercier picked up his second assist of the game.  The final shots on goal were 16 for Kingsville for a total of 42 while Mooretown had 19 this period and a total of 37 for the game.  The Comets were 0 for 3 with the man advantage this period and went 0 for 7 in the game.  Mooretown went 1 for 3 on the power play this period and were 2 for 8 in the game.
