Flags Drop
Close Contest to League Leaders
Final Score:
Essex - 4 Mooretown - 3
by Deb Lawrence
In goal for Essex
was Chris Zelko and taking the loss for
the Flags was Justin Belanger who kicked
out an amazing 38 of 42 shots faced.
Essex opened the
scoring at 1:27 on a Brian Hamlin goal
from Derek Vivier and Nick Nicodemo
and would take a two goal lead 1:24 later.
Notching the marker was Sean Ducharme who
walked in from the left wing to the crease and
stuffed a low shot behind Belanger. An assist
went to Cory Hamilton. The 73s continued
to control play for the most part until some
good work in the corner paid off and Nick
Kozmin fed a quick pass to Steve Mercier
whose shot found the back of the net and got the
Flags onto the scoreboard at the 5:02 mark.
Essex continued to dominate play and the Flags
found themselves in their own end far more often
then in the offensive end. With 13 seconds
remaining in the period Aaron Schieman of
Mooretown was assessed a minor for slashing and
Essex began the second period with the man
advantage. Shots on goal: Essex - 14
Mooretown - 8.
In the second
period the Flags successfully killed off the
penalty to Schieman and then began to exert some
pressure on the 73s and as a result tied the
game at two goals each at the 3:53 mark.
Lighting the lamp for the home team was Donny
Bowling with assists to Jordan Pennesi
and Aaron Schieman. It was a strange
looking goal as Bowling roofed a back hand shot
from the right wing long side over the stick of
a very surprised Zelko. Even though the Flags
had managed to tie the game it was Essex who
maintained possession of the puck often and the
Flags found themselves defending a great deal in
their own end. Shots on goal: Essex - 15/29
Mooretown - 10/18. The 73s had the only power
play chance thus far and were unable to
capitalize on it.
Essex came out
this period the same way they had the previous
two, maintaining puck possession and spending
time in their offensive zone and it led to them
taking the lead on a Jordan Brohman goal
at the 1:54 mark. Assists went to Troy Cox
and Wes Tan. The Flags got into a bit of
penalty trouble beginning with a tripping minor
at 4:25 that saw Elliott Lewis spend two minute
in the sin bin. While he was in there Mooretown
had a chance at a short-handed goal near the
5:20 mark but the shot was stopped and a faceoff
took place deep in Essex's end to the right of
the goaltender. Then at 6:43 Jeff Paulley of
Mooretown was called for roughing in his own end
it was while he was in the box that the winning
goal was scored. It would come at 7:48 and off
the stick of Nick Nicodemo from Mike
Dobric and Dan Bacon. It appeared at
first the Belanger might have stopped it but
somehow it squeezed by him and trickled across
the blue line to the chagrin of the Mooretown
fans. The Flags got one back at 13:26 and it was
Josh Teschke whose shot found the back of
the net. The lone assist went to Travis
Mullen. It seemed that Mooretown had tied
the game on a short-handed marker. A high flying
puck was making its way down and while it was
doing so it swatted in by a Flags player.
Unfortunately the stick making contact with the
puck was too high and the goal was disallowed
much to the disappointment of the many Mooretown
fans. During the final 75 seconds, Mooretown
goalie Belanger began to inch his way to the
blue line and once his team mates got control of
the puck in the neutral zone he made a beeline
to the bench. Also during this time the Flags
were on the power play as Troy Cox was called
for interference at 17:43 so when Belanger went
to the bench the Flags had 6 skater to Essex's
four. Mooretown had a glorious chance to tie
the game a couple of times but could not get the
equalizer behind Zelko. In spite of the loss
the Flags played a well disciplined game and
made Essex work for the two points they got for
the win. Shots on goal: Essex - 13/42
Mooretown - 8/26. Essex was 1 for 4 with the
man advantage and Mooretown was 0 for 2 on the
power play this game.

Flags Close
out November With a WIN
Final
Score: Blenheim - 2 Mooretown - 4
by Deb
Lawrence
After a hard
fought loss on Saturday night at home
against the league leading 73s, the Flags
took their four game loss streak into
Blenheim and brought it to a halt. Playing
before a crowd of 212 the visitors took home
a much needed two points and picking up the
win between the pips for Mooretown was
Justin Belanger. On the losing end for
the Blades was Chad Summerfield.
In the first
period an interference minor was taken by
Mooretown's Jeff Paulley and the Blades got
on the board first with a power play goal
with three seconds left in the penalty.
Scoring the goal was Dan Paget from
Ben Campbell and Kyle Fiorini.
There was a holding minor taken by Falconer
of Blenheim but the Flags could not convert
with the man advantage. Shots on goal:
Blenheim - 7 Mooretown - 9.
Mooretown took
all of 12 seconds to tie the game at one
each. Notching the goal was Spencer
Lightfoot with an assist to Nick
Kozmin. Giving the Flags the lead at
the 10:02 mark was Jordan Pennesi and
picking up assists on this goal were Adam
Teschke and Alex Dawson. The
Flags jumped out to a two goal lead 71
seconds later as Jordan Pennesi
banged home his second of the game and it
would prove to be the game winner. Helpers
on this goal were Spencer Lightfoot
and Mike Berry. Some raw feelings
spilled out during this stoppage in play and
a a result Berry of Mooretown and Joey Ray
of the Blades had a bit of a sparring match
before they headed to the showers for an
early exit from this evening's match. A
couple more minors were called but nothing
came of either one. Blenheim got back to
within one on an Aaron Wilkins goal
with 2:25 remaining in the period. The lone
assist went to Taylor Phillips.
Shots on goal: Blenheim - 11/18 Mooretown
- 18/27. The Blades went 0 for 1 with the
man advantage while the Flags were 0 for 2
on the power play this period.
Although the
Blades held the advantage in shots this
period and had twice as many power play
chances as did the Flags, it was Mooretown
who scored the only marker during this
twenty minutes of play. It would come at
the 11:11 mark and off the stick of
Elliot Lewis with Mike Burns and
Adam Little picking up assists.
Blenheim did pull their goalie for 27
seconds in favour of an extra attacker but
were not successful in getting anything
further behind Belanger. Shots on goal:
Blenheim - 16/34 Mooretown - 5/32. The
Blades were 0 for 2 with the man advantage
this period and were 1 for 4 in the game.
The Flags went 0 for 1 on the power play
this period and were 0 for 4 in the game.
In the
first week of December the Flags have two
games - both at home.
On
Wednesday the 3rd the Wheatley Sharks pay a
visit - it's a 8:00 puck drop. Then on
Saturday the 6th these same Blades make an
appearance at the Mooretown Sports Complex.
It's a 7:30 start!
