Mooretown Flags Gave One Away
October 19, 2013

What just happened?  Was the question going around the Moore Sports complex last night in the game between the Mooretown Flags and Wheately Sharks Jr C teams.

The Flags had a 5 - 1 lead halfway in the second and the Sharks went on the attack and scored 5 unanswered goals in the last half of the period to win the game 6 - 5.

"Not much to say" Head Coach Jordan Pennesi said  "We just quit and we didn't play a full sixty minutes."

In the first period Wheatley opened the scoring at 2:35 with Eric Rivard scoring.  At 4:09 Macgregor Haddon scored for the Flags with Chad Beauchamp assisting to even the score.  Matt Brandon gave the Flags the lead at 13:26 with Haddon earning the assist. Haddon earned his 3rd point of the night scoring the final goal with Dan Lumley assisting.

"He (Mcgregor Haddon) was our best player tonight for sure.  I thought in our own zone end and offensive zone he was working really hard and created a lot of chances for himself. He's a great player, tonight was his best game of the year." Pennesi said

After taking a 3 - 1 lead in the first the Flags added two quick goals in the second the first at 9:04 by Austin Ainsworth from Caden Fleming and then at 10:16 Brett Thompson scored with Lumley assisting.

Then the Shark attack began and in just under

eight minutes Wheatley scored 5 unanswered goals that had the fans shaking their heads in disbelief.

"Just got a little comfortable the first time with that big of a lead  and we just kind of quit and sat back and let them play the game, that's what happens when you don't play a full sixty minutes." Pennesi said

Third period neither side scored and the score remained the same giving Wheatley the win.

Wheatley outshout the Flags 47 - 34.  Netminder Steven Taylor who was left hanging several times that caused several goals played two periods and recorded the loss.  Taylor made 29 saves on 35 shots.  Brandon Johnson relieved Taylor in the third and made 12 saves.

"It's a group effort, everyone's got to play.  It's a five man group on the ice and you got to make sure you do your job. As soon as you make mistakes they can easily put the puck in the back of the net real fast."

On the winning side Conner MacKinnon made 29 saves.

Both sides were even in power play opportunities and went zero for two.

The Flags are now in 4th spot in the Great Lakes Jr C standings race with 6 - 5- 1, two points behind Wheatley.

The Flags are back in action Sunday when they travel to Blenheim (4-3) with a puck drop at 7:30 pm.

"Blenheim has a lot of speed and at home they are always tough to beat on a Sunday so we have to make sure we bounce back after tonight, we can't dwell on the loss but make sure we get ready to play a full 60."
