Mooretown Flags End Essex's Win Streak

The Mooretown Flags ended the Essex's 73's winning streak last night in a 3 - 2 shoot out in front of the home crowd at the Moore Recreation Centre giving the Flags three wins in four nights this week.  The last time these two teams met Essex won 5 - 4 in overtime.

"Overall it was a very good game." Flags Director Joe Lavers said on behalf of the team. "Obviously by the shots Essex carried the play but Brandon Johnson played a very strong game." 

Essex out shot Mooretown 50 - 38. Brandon Johnson was outstanding in net earning the win with 48 saves. 

Assistant coaches Joel Workman and Tyler Fraser ran the bench as Head Coach Jordan Pennesi was attending a funeral visitation.

Mooretown's Brett Thompson opened the scoring early in the first period at 2:54 with an unassisted goal.  At 5:21 Essex tied things up on a power play by Daniel McIntyre.  Action continue and the period ended with the two sides equal with one each.

Second period intense action continued with great goaltending in each end that resulted in a scoreless period. 

In the third period Sam Jasmin scored on the power play and gave the Flags the lead at 1:09 into the period. Brandon Layman earned the assist on the play.  Midway into the period Essex scored the tying goal that was scored by Jordan  Ryan. Like the first period neither side scored and the game went into over time. 

After 5 minutes the game wasn't decided and the game became a goal tender duel where Brandon Johnson denied three Essex shooters.  Dan Lumley was the Flags first shooter and he was stopped.  Brandon Layman went up second and beat 73's Arren Romeril for the win.

Both sides scored one goal on the power play.  Essex had seven opportunities in total, Mooretown had five.

The Flags currently sit in third place with a record of 5 wins, 3 losses and 1 overtime loss for a total of 11 points.

Up next the Flags have two road trips with the first on Friday Oct 11 at 7:30 in Belle River against the Canadiens.   Belle River record is 6 - 3 and are 1 point ahead of the Flags.  This will be the first matchup between these two teams. Then on Tuesday Oct 15 at 7:15 the Flags will travel back to Essex for their 3rd game between the two teams.
