Mooretown Flags Down 2 - 0 in Playoff Series
February 4, 2015

Great Lakes Jr. C Hockey League

After a hard fast paced game the Flags are now down 2 - 0 in playoff action against the Essex 73's after taking a 7 - 4 loss Wednesday night at home.

Despite groans being heard after Essex scored just a minute and twenty eight seconds into the game by Michael Vieira the two sides played a hard solid first period.

The Flags who were missing key players Dan Lumley, Sam Jasmin (both injured) and Brett Thompson (suspension) picked up AP players Trevor Bogaert and Parker Gilhuly who both earned assists on the Flags first goal scored by Alec Segers after taking the shot as he lost his footing at 9:06.  The first period ended with the two sides tied at 1 - 1 and the shots on goal were 11 - 10 in favour of Essex.

In the second the Flags held their own until Essex's Alex Derksen finally took the lead at 13:10 then the 73's added another when Matthew Hebert capitalized on the power play just over two minutes later then Michael Vieira added his second of the night and the third goal in the period just under a minute later to take a 4 - 1 lead.  As the announcement was being made on the last Essex's goal Justin Vanbuskirk found the opening and narrowed the gap to 4 - 2.  Ryan Lyle picked up the assist on the goal.  Essex led in shots on goal in the second 12 - 5.

Third period action saw Matthew Hebert score his second power play goal at 4:59.  The Flags answered back at 6:31 with a power play goal by defenceman Sam McCormack with Joe DeSena earning the assist.  DeSena then went on and scored an unassisted power play goal at 11:02 that narrowed the gap to just 1 goal that gave the fans hope that a comeback was in store.  But the fans were denied when Essex went on and scored 2 more goals the first at 14:02 by William Stadder and at 18:14 Michael Vieira added his third of the night.

Essex led again on shots on goal with a third period tally of 15 - 3 for a total of 37 - 19.

Netminder Brandon Johnson made some pretty amazing saves for the Flags for a total of 30.  Noah Hedrick earned the win with 15 saves.

Both teams scored two on four power opportunities.

The two teams are back in action on Friday night in Essex then back in Mooretown on Saturday.
