The Western Counties Baseball League Playoffs got underway Wednesday night as Port Lambton Pirates played host to the Wyoming Cattlebarons. Game 1 of the best of three series between the evenly matched teams was close as expected. The Pirates jumped out to a two run lead in the 3rd inning with RBI’s from Craig Bezaire and Chris Cowden. Pirates starting pitcher Cory Toms threw well holding the Cattlebarons off the score board until the 5th inning. Matt McGrail got the offense started for Wyoming with a 2 run double in the 5th to tie the game. Wyoming would put up another 2 runs in the 6h inning to take a 4-2 lead. Wyoming starting pitcher Ryan Nutma would hold off the Pirates the rest of the way throwing the complete game win striking out 3, walking 4 and allowing 3 hits in the game.
Wyoming had a total of 8 hits with Matt McGrail hitting a single and double, and singles from Craig Hall, Erick O’Brien, Justin Grift, Steve Helps, Matt Helps and Mark Schoenmaker.
Port Lambton’s hits came off the bats of Spence Dalgety with a double and a single each from Mike Scott and Nate Amaloot.
In other League playoff action Sarnia defeated Corunna 3 - 1 in Game 1 of the best of three series and in the Round Robin Playoff series with Courtright, Forest and Petrolia playing, Courtright defeated Forest 4 - 2.
