Junior Pairs Skaters Michael Marinaro of Sarnia and Margaret Purdy of Watfor are in Sochi, Russia competing at the Junior ISU Grand Prix Figure Skating Competing. The event is being held at the 2014 Winter Olympics venue.
Going into the competition the couple were rank #1 in the world in the Junior Division. After the short program they sit in second place.
Purdy and Marinaro scored 51.83 points and the Russians Lina Fedorova and Maxim Miroshkin are in the lead with 54.37 points. Vasilisa Davankova and Andrei Deputat of Russia are third with 51.34. Canadians Brittany Jones of Toronto and Ian Beharry of Guelph are in sixth spot.
"It felt really good," said Purdy. "We had a few stumbles but performed well. We really enjoyed skating on this ice and we connected well."
"It is a really close competition between all six entries" said Marinaro. "We are going to have to go out there and skate our best in the long program. It's a big experience for us to be here especially with the big crowds which is something we are not use to."
The competition continues on Saturday with the Free Skate.
