Rapids Swimmers Make Waves In Home Meet

The pool at the Jerry McCaw Family Centre on Finch Drive was host to a St. Clair Erie Aquatic League (SEAL) swim meet on Sunday, December 2.  Fifty swimmers from the hosting Sarnia Y Rapids 1 Swim Team participated.

Four swimmers, all in the 7-and-under age group, earned 1st place ribbons. Alaina Burns finished 1st in the 25m breaststroke, and 6th in the 25m butterfly. Jack Girardi came 1st in the 25m backstroke and 25m breaststroke, and added a 2nd place finish in the 25m freestyle and 3rd in the 25m butterfly. Allie Rawson placed 1st in the 25m freestyle, adding a 3rd place finish in the 25m backstroke, a 4th in the 25m butterfly and a 5th in the 25m breaststroke. These three were joined by Adam Voisey on the winning 100m medley relay team. Adam also earned two 2nd place finishes, a 3rd place and a 4th place in his individual events.

Four other swimmers finished in the Top 3: Hannah Elliott, 9, placed 3rd in the 25m breaststroke, and added a 4th place finish in the 50m freestyle. Nadine Osmon, 11, came 3rd in the 50m butterfly, and added ribbons in each of her other individual events. Kaiden Rawson, 10, finished 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th in the 100 m Individual Medley (IM), 50m breaststroke, 100m freestyle and 50m butterfly respectively. Hayden Scott, 9, placed 2nd in the 100m IM, 25m butterfly and 50m freestyle, and 5th in the 25m breaststroke.

Also earning ribbons were: Abby Allardyce, 11 (6th in the 50m breaststroke); Breadon Babenko, 7 (4th in the 25m backstroke, 5th in the 25m breaststroke and 6th in the 25m freestyle); Samantha Bedard, 10 (5th in the 100m freestyle); Jack Biggar, 10 (4th in the 100m IM, 50m backstroke and 50m breaststroke); Raphael Carrier-Moreault, 7 (6th in the 25m breaststroke); Fiona Elliott, 9 (4th in the 25m breaststroke);  Burak Gurtekin, 8 (6th in the 100m IM); Simon Harris, 9 (5th in the 100m IM and 50m freestyle and 6th in the 25m breaststroke); Hannah Lacey, 12 (6th in the 100m IM); Matthew Osmon, 6 (4th in the 25m breaststroke, 5th in the 25m freestyle and 6th in the 25m backstroke); Hunter Small, 13 (5th in the 100m breaststroke); and Luke Young, 13 (4th in the 100m freestyle, 5th in the 50m butterfly and 6th in the 100m IM).

Erin Lacey, 10, improved her time in the 50m breaststroke by more than 25 seconds. Fellow 10-year-old, Olivia Voisey improved her time in the 100m IM by more than 8 seconds. Connor Phipps, 12, shaved almost 15 seconds off his seed time for the 100m IM.

Also swimming were Reese Adams, 6; Morgan Allison, 11; Caelan Babenko, 9; Ciara Brown, 10; McKenna Brown, 8; Dylan Cloud, 11; Rachel Dalton, 12; Sean Foster, 9; Alexandra Gouveia, 13; Rebecca Haney, 7; Rylynn Haney, 11; Luc Harradence, 7; Tirzah Hayes, 8; Faith Jamieson, 11; Samantha Lefebvre, 13; Taylor Marut, 8; Sydney Moraal, 9; Nik Mukherjee, 9; Aynsley Persad, 13; Sarah Phipps, 8; Sean Phipps, 9; Annabelle Rayson, 7; Ethan Robertson, 12; Nes Tulang, 11; Alex VanSickle, 8; Matthew VanSickle, 6; and Trista Walsh, 12.

The Sarnia Y Rapids 1 swimmers are coached by Sue Athanasopoulos. This group’s next meet is in Blenheim on January 13.
