Indians Back on Winning Track

May 30, 2012

With a 4-4 record on the young season, the Alvinston Indians traveled to Glencoe on Tuesday, with the intent being to step above the .500 mark on the season, against a potent Glencoe offence.

The Indians sent young hurler Kyle Crawford to the mound. Crawford started on the wrong foot, allowing two runs in the opening stanza to Glencoe, but he was dominant the rest of the way.

With a 2-0 deficit and two out in the third inning, Alvinston finally got on the scoresheet in the third inning, when Andy Triest walked, and then scored all the way from first after a single by Chris Drew to the outfield, that was bobbled by the outfielder. Brad Young then followed with a single that scored Drew to knot the game at 2's.

With the score now tied, Alvinston went back on the defence, but a walk and two singles by Glencoe plated their third run, for a 3-2 lead. In Alvinston's half of the fifth inning, Jamie Shields led off the inning by reaching first safely after a Glencoe error. Joe Triest then followed with a single to put runners at first and third, and Andy Triest executed the suicide squeeze to perfection, plating Shields from third for the tying run.

In the sixth, Alvinston finally took control of the game, when Aaron Stocking singled, and then was sacrificed to second by Chris Sheppard. Alix Chisholm replaced Stocking on the base paths for Alvinston, and after a Shields walk to put runners on first and third, Chisholm then scored on a wild pitch, for the game's go ahead run. Joe Triest then followed with an RBI triple that scored Shields for a 5-3 lead.

Alvinston then secured the win in the seventh, when they added five more runs, on five hits, with the big hits being a solo homerun by Chris Drew, and a bases clearing double by Chris Sheppard. Scoring in the last inning, were Drew, Pat Sanders, Jeff Lyons, Stocking and Shepherd. Shields drove in the final run when he doubled.

Stocking, Joe Triest, Young, and Drew all had multi hit games for the Indians in the 10-3 victory. Crawford was the winning pitcher in the game for Alvinston, allowing 3 earned runs in 7 innings of work. Crawford allowed 5 hits and 2 walks in the game, while striking out 9 Glencoe swingers. Alvinston is back in action on Thursday night, when Glencoe visits Alvinston in a home and home series, beginning at 8:00pm.
