Planet Stitch Inferno 46 Royal vs Canadian Legion Branch 62 Iron Hides 22
The SMAA Football Championship games were held Saturday November 3 on the north field at Norm Perry Park. These games mark the last time football will be played on natural grass at Norm Perry Park. The main field remains under construction, with the completion date for the new turf field set for July 1 2013.
In the Atom Division the opportunistic Planet Stitch Inferno recovered 3 fumbles and this proved the difference in their battle with the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 62 Iron Hides.
On the opening play of the game, the Iron Hides committed their first turnover deep in their own territory. On the very next play Ethan Barnes wove his way into the end zone. A convert by Mitchel Schechinger ensued and the Inferno were up 8-0 before the game was 30 seconds old.
Lucas Kita utilized his speed on the Iron Hide's next possession for a 35 yard touchdown gallop. A convert by Mattheus Hartman, knotted the game at 8. The teams then traded touchdowns with Barnes scoring for the Inferno and Hartman for the Iron Hides. Hartman converted his major and this put the Hides up 16-14 with less than a minute to play in the half.
The Inferno quickly marched the ball down the field and Barnes scored his third major on the last play of the half. Schechinger's convert had the Inferno up 22-16 at the half. Turnovers cost the Iron Hides in the second half. Barnes added 2 more majors and quarterback Cody Johnston ran the ball in from the 1 on a quarterback sneak.
The Iron Hides crossed the goal line once in the second half on a 26 yard reverse by Jaxon Rawcliffe. The Inferno prevailed 46-22.
