Rapids Swimmers Make Waves to Start Season

Thirty-eight swimmers from the Sarnia Y Rapids 1 Swim Team attended the first swim meet of the St. Clair Erie Aquatic League (SEAL) season in Aylmer in October.

Three swimmers earned 1st place finishes. Nine-year-old Hayden Scott came 1st in the 25m butterfly, and 2nd in the 25m backstroke, 25m breaststroke and 50m freestyle. Jack Girardi, 7, placed 1st in the 25m breaststroke, 2nd in the 25m backstroke, and 3rd in the 25m butterfly and 25m freestyle. Ten-year-old Jack Biggar finished 1st in the 50m breaststroke, and added a 4th-place finish in the 100m freestyle and 5th in the 50m backstroke.

Four other 7-year-old team members participated. Breadon Babenko came 4th in the 25m backstroke and 25m breaststroke, and 5th in the 25m freestyle. Allie Rawson finished 5th in the 25m butterfly and 6th in the 25m breaststroke. Also swimming were Rebecca Haney and Annabelle Rayson in their first meet as part of the team.

Among the 8-year-olds, McKenna Brown achieved a Top 10 finish, and shaved time from her previous personal bests. Burak Gurtekin earned ribbons in all his events: 3rd place in the 25m backstroke and 25m breaststroke, 4th in the 50m freestyle and 5th in the 25m butterfly. Taylor Marut finished 4th in the 25m butterfly and 6th in the 25m breaststroke. Sydney Moraal had two Top 10 finishes in her first meet as a Rapids swimmer.

Nine-year-old Caelan Babenko earned two Top 10 finishes in his first meet as a Rapids swimmer. Twins Fiona and Hannah Elliott came 3rd and 5th respectively in the 25m breaststroke and swam several personal best times. Sean Foster finished 5th in the 25m butterfly, 25m breaststroke and 50m freestyle and 6th in the 25m backstroke, while Sean Phipps placed 5th in the 25m backstroke and 6th in the 25m butterfly.

Among the 10-year-olds from Sarnia, Samantha Bedard finished 3rd in the 100m freestyle and 6th in the 50m butterfly while setting new personal best times. Ciara Brown placed 4th in the 50m butterfly and Top 10 in all her events. Mckenna Jackson had a Top 10 finish and Erin Lacey also swam a strong meet. Kaiden Rawson came 2nd in the 50m breaststroke and 100m freestyle, 4th in the 50m butterfly and 6th in the 50m backstroke.

Seven 11-year-old team members participated. Abby Allardyce placed 4th in the 50m breaststroke. Dylan Cloud finished 6th in the 50m breaststroke and in the Top 10 in each of his events, setting personal best times. Rylynn Haney took time off of each of her personal bests, including more than 10 seconds in the 50m breaststroke. Nadine Osmon came 6th in the 50m butterfly. Also swimming were Morgan Allison, Faith Jamieson, and Nes Tulang.

Twelve-year-olds Meghan Jackson, Brianna Kita, Hannah Lacey, Samantha Lefebvre, Katherine McCahill and Trista Walsh swam in a very competitive field, with Samantha finishing 6th in the 200m freestyle. Connor Phipps came 5th in the 50m butterfly and 6th in the 100m breaststroke. Zoe Little, 13, placed 6th in the 100m breaststroke.

Rounding out the team representation were 15-year-olds Dariel Gomez, who finished in the Top 10 in each of his events including a 5th place in the 100m breaststroke, and Haley Doran, who earned two Top 10 finishes.

The Sarnia Y Rapids 1 swimmers are coached by Sue Athanasopoulos. This groupís next meet is in Windsor on November 24.
