SMAA Saturday Football Highlights

In the opening game on Saturday the hard luck Lanxess Shock Wave battled the second place Rob Simrak Magic Realty Razor Claws. The Razor Claws struck quickly opening up a 22-0 lead at the half on touchdown runs of 20 yards by Matt Gouviea, a 1 yard run by Spencer Villemare and a scamper of 22 yards by Jackson Grasse. Gouviea added 2 converts. The Shock Wave came back in the second half, outscoring the Claws 16-12 on scoring runs by Jordan Foster and Aaron Shanks. Speedy Ava Phillips kept these drives alive by key runs third down. Jordan Foster converted both majors. Gouviea and Villemare added majors for the Razor Claws, who prevailed 34=16. In the other Atom Division game the Planet Stitch Inferno put their undefeated streak on the line in a battle with the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 62 Iron Hides. The teams were tied 6-6 at the half as Mattheus Hartmann ran for 12 yards for the Iron Hides and Cody Johnston tallied a major on a 1 yard quarterback sneak for the Inferno. Ethan Barnes gave the Inferno the lead in the second half on a 3 yard run and a successful convert. The Hides battled back and their efforts were rewarded when Lucas Kita sprinted 25 yards to the end zone. Hartmann's convert knotted the score at 14. The Inferno then drove down the field on their final drive which culminated in another major by Johnston and a 20-14 Inferno victory.

Two close games highlighted the PeeWee Division, In the first game the Avengers took on the Force. The 2 previous games involving these teams were split with each team earning a 1 point victory. On the Force's initial possession. Jackson Smiley scampered 60 yards, staking the Force to a 6-0 lead. The Avengers countered with a major the first time they had the ball. Mitchell Hillsdon was a workhorse on this drive and his 5 yard run drew the Avengers even. Zachary Tremblay's convert on the ensuing play put the Avengers up 8-6. The Force scored 2 more majors in the half as Adam Wilkins rumbled in from 2 yards out and Avery Smiley sprinted 55 yards. The teams traded a pair of touchdowns in the second half as Hillsdon ran for 2 more majors. Jackson Smiley and Wilkins countered for the Force as they prevailed 31-22. The final game between first place Storm and the second place Fury promised to be a close one and it did not disappoint. The teams battled to a 0-0 draw at the half. Hunter Hendrie's 15 yard run opened the scoring and Garrett Patterson's convert had the Storm up 8-0. The Fury evened the game on their ensuing drive as Wade Marshall dashed 55 yards and Mark Bridge converted. With 5 minutes remaining Garrett Patterson ran to the corner from three yards out and then booted a key convert. As time ran down, the Fury commenced their final drive. With only a minute and a half remaining, Marshall again tallied a major, this time from 16 yards out. The game tying conversion attempt was blocked and the Storm held on for a hard fought 16-14
