In
Great Lakes Jr C hockey action the Alvinston Flyers
opened the 2012 with game one of a home/home series
against the Blenheim Blades. The Blades took
the first game with a final score of 6 - 3.
Blenheim opened the scoring in the first period with
just a 1:23 off the clock. Tyler Clarke scored
the game opener for the Blades. Midway into
the period Dylan Lightfoot scored a power play goal
for Alvinston to even the score and the two sides
skated to the end of the period with the score
remaining at 1 - 1.
In the second Blenheim added a pair the first by
Jordan Regier and the second by neven Wiebenga.
Jake McPhail narrowed the gap scoring on the power
play but late in the period Thomas Innes scored the
third goal for Blenheim on the power play to end the
period leading 4 - 2.
In
the third Alvinston scored to again narrow the gap
by one and the two sides went end to end until the
final minute of the game when Alvinston pulled their
goalie only to have Thomas Innes score into the
empty net at 19:24. The Blades went on and
added a final goal with just :01 second left on the
clock to add to the tally. Justin Rossignol
scored the final goal.
Blenheim outshout
Alvinston by a total of 36 - 21. Reid Rankin
took the loss making a total of 30 saves.
Dylan Vanderpol won with 18 saves.
Alvinston went 2 for 6 in power play opportunities,
Blenheim went 1 for 3.
The win for Blenheim
(17-12-1OTL -35pts) gave them the number 1 spot in
the North Division standings race pushing Mooretown
(16-12-2OTL - 34pts) into 2nd place. Alvinston
14-15-3OTL - 31 pts) remains in 3rd place.
Blenheim and Alvinston
are back in action on Friday January 6 in Alvinston
for game 2 of the series. Game time at 7:30pm.
