Canadian women’s team
looking good in London at Olympic Qualifier

Canadian women’s gymnastics team
has virtually clinched a berth
at the 2012 Olympics with an
impressive performance in the
first of four groups Wednesday
at the last chance qualification
meet where eight teams are
battling for the final four
spots at the Games this summer.
The Canadians excelled in the
vault event and never looked
back, finishing ahead of the
Netherlands, the only other team
in the first group of
competitors.
Canada’s score of
221.913 is expected to be more
than enough to earn one of just
12 full-team berths this summer
in London.
The Netherlands scored 212.061
points to rank a distance
second.
Six more teams are set to
compete in the final two
sessions on Wednesday,
On vault, three of the five
Canadian competitors landed
double twisting Yurchenkos with
Sarnia's Bluewater Gymnastic
Club member Talia Chiarelli
leading the way with a score of
14.500. Fifteen year-old
Victoria Moors was right behind
at 14.400 and Brittany Rogers
scored 14.200 in an eye-popping
overall display.
Peng Peng Lee was the top
Canadian all around and tied for
Kristina Vaculik for the team’s
best score on uneven bars
(14.33).
Moors, 15, a new addition to the
team along with Rogers since the
Tokyo world championships in
October, was tops on floor with
a score of 14.183 and Canadian
all around champion Madeline
Gardiner had the best result on
beam with 14.133 points.
Competing in the remaining
groups today are France,
Belgium, Italy, Spain, Korea and
Brazil.
