Minor Atom AAA Come Up Short in First Tournament

September 23, 2012

The Lambton Jr. Sting Minor Atom AAA played in their first tournament of the season this past weekend, participating in the London Jr. Knights Early Bird Tournament, where they came away with 2 wins and 2 losses. The Jr. Sting met the host team (and league rivals) in their first game of the tournament. The game was a penalty filled affair and unfortunately, the Jr. Knights had the Sting's number and came away with a 6-0 win. In game 2 of the tournament, Lambton met up against the York Simcoe Express. Once again, the game was full of penalties and the Express came away with a 5-1 win. The Sting's goal was scored by Derek "Tugger" Esselment on a pass from underage winger, Austin Harper.

Day 2 of the tournament faired much better for this young team. They faced the Guelph Jr. Storm in their third game and came away with a convincing 6-1 win. Point scorers in the game for the Lambton Jr. Sting were defenseman Nicholas Medeiros (1G, 2A), winger Austin Harper (1G, 1A), winger Andrew "Chacunsongoût" Lemieux (2G), and centre Derek Esselment (2G). Goaltender, Blake "Fozzy" Foster made some key saves throughout the game to earn his 2nd win of the season.

The Jr. Sting followed up their strong performance against the Jr. Storm with a phenomenal team effort versus the high-flying Toronto Red Wings. Lambton played the game of their young lives and won a nail bitter 3-2. The Jr. Sting took the early lead in the first period when winger Jake "JMAC" MacLean scored his first of the season from centre Ryder Nienhuis. The Red Wings would come back in the second and at the end of the period, the score was tied 2-2. Scoring for the Sting, with his second of the game, was Jake MacLean on a beautiful cross ice pass from Andrew Lemieux. Both teams played hard in the third and had numerous chances. Fortunately, Lambton was the lone team to capitalize on one of their chances and went up 3-2 early in the third. Defenseman, Wesley "Seabiscuit" Brooks scored his first of the season on a shot from the point that bounced around and somehow found the back of the net. Andrew Lemieux was given his second assist of the game on the play. The defense corpse of Owen "Bones" Chambers, Madeleine "Angry Barbie" Godfrey, Matthew Moore, Nicholas Medeiros and Wesley Brooks played beyond their years and blocked numerous shots to help keep the score close. Goaltender, Kaden "KMAN" Gray, made a couple of spectacular saves, including a toe save with just 1:06 left in the game to earn his first win of the season.

The Lambton Jr. Sting Minor Atom AAA team has a very busy schedule this coming week with a road game in Chatham on Thursday night and home games on Saturday and Sunday afternoon versus the Waterloo Wolves and the Kitchener Jr. Rangers. Go Sting Go!!!!
