Wolves Stung in the Beehive

September 24, 2012

Sarnia Sept 23 – Your AAA Major Midget Jr. Sting welcomed the Waterloo Wolves for a game Sunday afternoon. The Jr. Sting knew they would be in for a game as last years Wolves went the entire regular season without a loss. Unlike last season though it would be Waterloo feeling the STING of a loss.

This game started hard and fast with both teams playing close checking hockey and with six minutes gone neither team had managed a shot on net.  The Stings first chance of the game came when David Veluz made a great little feed to Mac Colasimone who’s shot found the post, Zac Lewis was right on the door step and made no mistake in burying the rebound.  The first period continued to be hard and fast with some huge body checks by Veluz and Brad Campbell.

The second period started with the Wolves pressing and eventually getting a great chance on Jr. Sting goalie Steven Taylor, but Taylor was up to the task making a great blocker save. As is so often the case, after a big save at one end a goal ends up in the opposite net. In this case it was CJ Griffith with a beautiful tip of Andrew Martin’s hard shot from the point to give Lambton a two goal lead. The game continued to be physical with Randy Hicks and Dylan Brooks punishing any Wolves that entered the Sting end.

As in the previous game the third period found the Jr. Sting running into penalty problems.  That is a mistake you just can’t make with a team as good as the Wolves and two power play goals less than two minutes apart set the stage for a dramatic finish. Some great penalty killing by Mark MacPherson and Keith Arnold kept the Wolves from getting a third goal as they pressed for the lead. With just a few minutes remaining the Wolves sprang a forward on a breakaway but with the game in the balance Taylor made a great save to force this one to overtime.

After turning around a couple of Wolves attempts the Jr. Sting flooded the Wolves end a hard point shot from Arnold was stopped by the goalie, Clay Williams grabbed the rebound only to have it stopped by the sprawling Waterloo goalie as well. In this case the third try was the charm as yesterday’s hero Joe DeSena found Williams rebound and buried it for the Overtime win.
