Saturday the Giants travelled to Essex to face the Essex “B” and Essex “A” teams. Game 1 vs the Essex “B” team saw the Giants fall behind 6 – 0 before mounting a comeback that saw them score 5 and 7 runs in back to back innings. Essex made a number of errors but the Giants bats also came to life as they pulled out a 12 – 8 win. Jordan Pavey in relief of Kyle Scott picked up the win. Pavey, Jeremy Devereaux and Mike Fisher all had two hits each in the win.
In the second game vs the Essex A team Keenan Smith threw a 7 inning gem as the teams played to a 2 – 2 tie. He allowed only 1 earned run, 5 hits, 3 walks and struck out 6 over the seven innings. Jordan Pavey had a two single that scored both Corunna runs in the 4th inning to tie the game.
On Tuesday night in Corunna at Duggan Field the Giants defeated Wyoming 8 – 7. Corunna scored 6 runs in the first inning but held on for the win when a passed ball allowed the winning run to cross the plate in the bottom of the 6th inning. Kyle Scott had three hits for the Giants. Pitching duties were shared by Jake Romphf, Zack Sutherland, Derek Williams and Kyle Smith.
The Corunna Midgets are also participating in the league playoff tournament this weekend. They host Essex A at 8:00 pm in Courtright on Friday night. It is a 12 team double knockout elimination tournament being played at various diamonds throughout the league. If they win Friday night they play at noon Saturday in Essex vs the winner of Tecumseh and Essex Minors. If they lose they play at 9:00 a.m. vs the loser of Tecumseh and Essex Minors in Windsor.
The Giants are hosting the All Ontario Midget “C” Championships on August 23rd – 25th in Corunna and Courtright. There are 10 teams participating and they are Corunna, Forest, Wallaceburg, Essex A, Amherstburg, Belle River, Hanover, Kincardine, Port Dover and Ilderton. Corunna plays Friday night (23rd) at 8:00 pm in Courtright vs Kincardine.
