Sarnia Lambton Hall of Fame Announces Award Recipients

The Sarnia Lambton Sports Hall of Fame is pleased to announce the 2013 Pappy Burr, Joe DeRush Memorial and Rose Hodgins Memorial Award Recipients.

Pappy Burr Award

This award is presented to student athletes who has achieved their O.S.S.D. and will be entering a university or college in the fall.  Ashley Bisson and Mike Rocca are this yearís Pappy Burr Award Recipients.

Ashley Bisson
Ashley Bisson graduated from St. Clair Secondary School and will be attending Brock University in the September 2013. 

During her years at St. Clair Bisson was involved with Basketball, Volleyball and Track and Field.  Bisson was a member of the Gold Medal SWOSSA Senior Basketball team in 2012 and earned MVP in both Junior and Senior Baskeball.  Bisson also received three Female Athlete of the Year Awards.  Bisson held several volunteer positions at St. Clair and was a member of the Key Club and P.A.I.R.S.

Ashley is the daughter of Dave and Cathy Bisson and has one brother Shaun.

 Mike Rocca
Mike Rocca graduated from St. Christopher Secondary School and will be attending the University of Windsor in September.

Rocca is a well-rounded athlete competing in Basketball, Soccer, Volleyball, Cross Country and Track and Field.  His list of achievements throughout his athletic time at St. Christopherís includes being named Cross Country OFSAA Team All Star, LSSAA soccer champions, with Bronze & Gold medal performances at OFSAA.  Rocca was the Senior Menís Basketball Team Captain and voted Most Valuable player in 2012.  In basketball he was a member of the team that earned LSSAA Championship, SWOSSA Championships and Silver & Gold medals performances at OFSAA. 


Rocca required major hip surgery in 2010 and was told by Doctors that he would take a year to recover.  His determination and hard work had him back on the courts in three months and the following basketball season he was awarded the Mr. Basketball Award that is presented to the Most Valuable player in Lambton County.


Beside sports, Rocca has been an active volunteer in the school and community.  He has been involved with several fundraising events, refereed and created a table tennis club in the Sarnia community at the Dante Club.

Mike is the son of Emilio and Maria Rocca and has two brothers Chris and Joe.

Joe DeRush Memorial Award

The Joe DeRush Memorial Trophy recognize athletes with disabilities.  The 2013 Award will be presented to Sledge Hockey Player Tyler McGregor.

Athlete Tyler McGregor from Forest, Ontario was diagnosed with Spindle Cell Sarcome in 2010 and as a result had to have his left leg amputated. 

McGregor;ís hockey career began at age 3 and he went on to play AAA hockey.  After his amputation McGregor competitive spirit continued and he turned to Sledge Hockey.  In 2012 McGregor was selected to Canadaís National Sledge Hockey team and has competed in National and International Tournaments.  In 2013 McGregor was a member of the Canadian Gold Medal team at the IPC World Sledge Ice Hockey Championship in Goyang, Korea.


Tyler is the son of Dean and Trudy and has one sister Meagan.

Rose Hodgson Memorial Award
This special award recognizes outstanding contribution to our community in memory of founding board member Rose Hodgson.  The 2013 Award is being presented to Bonnie Kearns.


Bonnie Kearns was a founding member of the Moore Gymnastics Club (now known as the Bluewater Gymnastic Club). The club began in 1975 and Kearns was involved as a coach and fundraiser until 1982.


Since then Kearns has volunteered with Red Cross, travelling as a Disaster Nurse to places like Afghanistan, Pakinstan, Puerto Rico and at Ground Zero in New York in September 2001.  She has also volunteered for the Inn of the Good Shepherd, and was a member of the District Health Council and the Chemical Valley Emergency Organization.


The Awards and Inductions Ceremony (click here for 2013 inductees) will be held on September 28th at the Camlachie Community Centre.  Tickets are $40.00 Adults and $15.00 Youth under 12 years.  Tickets are available from members of the Board of Directors. click here for more contact and other information.
