Legionnaires Has Plenty of Talent to Select From at Training Camp
monday august 19, 2013

By Dan McCaffery

Head coach Dan Rose was in an upbeat mood Sunday after watching 80 athletes try out for his Sarnia Legionnaires.

Rose said the Jr. 'B' hockey club has plenty of talent to select from.

"We're really, really happy with what we've got to choose from,” he said. “There's way more skill than we thought. We know for sure we'll have 20 good players.”

Newcomer Riley Babkirk has been a standout at the camp.

The 18-year-old Leamington native had two goals and an assist during the club's annual black-and-white intersquad game Sunday.

Babkirk split last winter between the Jr. 'B' Leamington Flyers and the Jr. 'C' Wheatley Sharks, scoring 27 goals and 46 assists for an impressive 73 points in 58 regular season and playoff games. Sixteen of those points, including four goals, came in the 27 contests he played with the Flyers.

Babkirk, who stands 6'1 and weighs in at 190 pounds, will be attending the Lambton College fire school in September.

Rose said, “Babkirk looked good out there. He's on our radar.”

Other players to score during the intersquad game included Josh Kestner, Brett Podgorski, Austin Rothe, Jeff King and Mike Zottl.

Rob Letzgus and Riley Roberts had two assists each while single helpers went to Babkirk, Thomas Moxley and Ryan Lyle.

Patrick Carney looked especially sharp in net for team black.

The Legionnaires play their first exhibition game at home Thursday, Aug. 22 against the Chatham Maroons.  Game time at the Brock Street rink is set for 7 p.m.
