Sarnia Jr. Sting Major Novice T1 Compete in Fort Erie

tuesday december 3, 2013

The Sarnia Sting Major Novice Tier 1 hockey team competed in the Greater Fort Erie Minor Hockey Tournament over the weekend.  Despite some strong performances the Sarnia Sting Major Novice T1 suffered 3 losses.

Game one had the Sting up against the Riverside Rangers.  Despite several quality scoring chances the Sting were only able to convert on one goal and lost 3 – 1.  Scoring for the Sting was Isaac Oliphant with assists going to Quinn James and Cameron McCarthy.  Hardest worker of the game awards were awarded to Adam Maitland, Caiden Smit and Landon Buckingham.

Sarnia’s scoring woes continued in game two as Sarnia could not capitalize on their many scoring opportunities and lost 5 – 2 to the Welland Tigers.  Sarnia racked up 14 minutes in penalties in a poorly officiated game.  Scoring for the Sting were Logan O’Leary-Dilosa and Aaron Shanks.  Assists went to Shanks, Garret Pearce and James.  Hardest worker awards went to Shanks, Isaac Oliphant and Lucas Gaspari.

Game three had the Sting up against eventual tournament champions, New Hamburg Huskies.  New Hamburg entered the tournament with a streak of 18 games and 56 periods without allowing a goal against.  The Sting were determined to halt the streak.  Although trailing 4 – 0 with almost 5 minutes to play the Sting pulled their goalie to go with 6 skaters.  Eventually a rocket from Tanner Winegard ended New Hamburg’s streak at 58 periods.  In a site not often seen in Minor Hockey, the entire New Hamburg team went out and congratulated their goalie for the outstanding streak.  The Sing eventually fell 4 – 1, but felt like winners for ending the Streak.  Cameron McCarthy picked up the assist on the goal.  Hardest worker awards were given to Buckingham, Smit and McCarty.

The Sting are off until Saturday when they host the North London Nationals.
