Toronto, ON – The Ontario Hockey League announced that Kerby Rychel of the Windsor Spitfires is the OHL Player of the Week for the week ending February 10 after leading the OHL with 10 points in three games scoring three goals with seven assists with a plus-minus rating of plus-1.
Rychel’s week was highlighted by a career-high six points on Thursday night as third star of a 9-4 win over the Peterborough Petes. In that contest he picked up his 30th goal of the season and added five assists including three that contributed to first star Alexander Khokhlachev’s second hat-trick of the season. Rychel also scored a goal and two assists on Saturday despite an 8-5 loss to the Ottawa 67’s, then scored the lone goal for the Spitfires in a 3-1 loss to the Kingston Frontenacs on Sunday extending his season-high point-streak to seven games.
Rychel, an 18-year-old from Tecumseh, ON, is playing in his third OHL season and is currently tied for ninth in league scoring with 66 points in 54 games with 32 goals and 34 assists. Eligible for the 2013 NHL Draft, Rychel competed with Team Orr in the Home Hardware CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game last month in Halifax and has been listed at 18th overall among North American Skaters by NHL Central Scouting in their midterm rankings.
Also considered for the award this week was fellow 2013 NHL Draft prospect Sean Monahan of the Ottawa 67’s who picked up eight points in three games including five goals and three assists, and Florida Panthers prospect Vince Trocheck of the Plymouth Whalers who scored seven goals with one assist for eight points in three games. In goal, Franky Palazzese of the Sudbury Wolves had a 1-0-0-1 record with a goals-against-average of 1.38 and save percentage of .955.
