Thursday February 21,  2013

Third period game winning goal by Davis Boyer gave the Sarnia Legionnaires the 5 - 4 win over the Strathroy Rockets to end their regular season on a winning note in Greater Ontario Jr B Hockey.

"It's positive, winning is better than losing and it gives you confidence." Head Coach Dan Rose said "I was proud of the guys tonight, they got a little scrambled but they fought through it and we still put the puck in the net."

Both teams were even at 2 - 2 after the first period.  Adam Vandersluis led the Rockets scoring the first goal of the game just :41 seconds into the first period.  At 7:02 Jeff Paulley scored for the Legionnaires with Derek D'Andrea and Brent Sauve assisting.  Strathroy regained the lead at 8:29 by a goal scored by Tyler Duarte and late in the period D'Andrea evened things up heading into the second.

Strathroy again regained the lead at 9:53 with Wes Baker scoring.  Strathroy ran into penalty troubles and Sarnia capitalized on the power play scoring back to back goals.  The first power play goal was scored at 18:40 by Josh Kestner from Jason Teschke and game MVP Derek D'Andrea, earning his 3rd point of the night.

The second power play goal came a minute and eight seconds later by Hunter Tyczynski from Nathan Mater which gave the Legionnaires the lead for the first time in the game as they headed into the third.

Captain Jeff Paulley took a match penalty at 1:18 in the third for kicking.  It is expected he will receive a suspension but that will be announce later after review of the incident.  On the power play Trevor Dulong evened the score scoring on the power play.

Boyer's game winner came at 10:52 with Mater and Kestner assisting and with the extra man attack by Strathroy the Legionnaires held on to take the win.

Strathroy outshot the Legionnaires 31 - 28.  Goaltender Sean Parker earned his 19th win of the season making 27 saves.  Dalen Kuchmey took the loss.

It is a now wait and see who to determine who the Legionnaires play in the first round of playoffs.

"We played each team six times, we know what each team has." said Rose "We know what their tendencies are and it's just a matter of getting the kids focus.  We will make adjustments during the playoffs, but as far as getting them up to play we don't' need to do that these kids are ready to play."
