Rapids Swimmer Top in class at Sprint Meet

Nine-year-old Hayden Scott, of the Sarnia Y Rapids 1 Swim Team, earned the champion’s trophy for 8- and 9-year-old boys at an invitational swim meet in Leamington in February. He finished 1st in the 50m butterfly and 200m Individual Medley (IM) and 3rd in the 50m backstroke, 50m breaststroke and 50m freestyle, to claim top spot overall.

Top 3 finishers included Jack Biggar, 11, with 3rd place in the 50m breaststroke, and 6th place finishes in the 50m butterfly, 50m backstroke and 200m IM. Ciara Brown, 10, finished 2nd in the 200m IM, as well as 5th in the 50m butterfly and 50m freestyle and 6th in the 50m backstroke. Kaiden Rawson, 10, placed 2nd in the 50m breaststroke, 50m freestyle and 200m IM, 3rd in the 50m butterfly and 5th in the 50m backstroke. Luke Young, 13, came 2nd in the 50m freestyle, 3rd in the 50m backstroke and 200m IM, 5th in the 50m butterfly and 6th in the 50m breaststroke.

McKenna Brown, 8, earned a ribbon with a 6th place finish in the 50m freestyle, while Taylor Marut, also 8, came 5th in the 200m IM. Aynsley Persad, 13, had two 6th place finishes, in the 50m butterfly and 50m backstroke.

Also swimming were Burak Gurtekin, 9; Faith Jamieson, 11; Brianna Kita, 13; and Trista Walsh, 12.

In a St. Clair Erie Aquatic League (SEAL) swim meet in Aylmer earlier in February, nine of the 36 swimmers from the Sarnia Y Rapids 1 Swim Team who participated finished first. Both 7-and-under mixed (Breadan Babenko, Allie Rawson, Annabelle Rayson and Adam Voisey, all 7) and 8- and 9-year-old mixed (McKenna Brown, 8, Burak Gurtekin, 9, Taylor Marut, 8, and Sydney Moraal, 9) relay teams finished 1st. In individual events, Hannah Elliott, 9, earned a 1st place finish in the 25m breaststroke and came 5th in the 25m backstroke and 6th in the 50m freestyle. Breadan added a 2nd place in the 25m breaststroke, and 3rd in the 25m butterfly, 25m backstroke and 25m freestyle. Allie placed 2nd in the 25m butterfly, 25m breaststroke and 25m freestyle, and 3rd in the 25m backstroke. Annabelle added a 5th place finish in the 25m breaststroke to 4th place finishes in the 25m butterfly, 25m backstroke and 25m freestyle. Adam came 2nd in the 25m butterfly and 4th in the 25m backstroke. Burak finished 4th in the 100m IM, 25m backstroke, 25m breaststroke and 50m freestyle, and 5th in the 25m butterfly. Taylor came 5th in the 25m backstroke, while Sydney finished 3rd in the 25m backstroke.

Five other swimmers finished in the Top 3: Ciara Brown, 10, came 3rd in the 50m backstroke and added 4th in the 50m breaststroke; Fiona Elliott, 9, placed 2nd in the 25m breaststroke and added a 5th place in the 25m butterfly; Kaiden Rawson, 10, scored 3rd place in the 50m butterfly, 50m backstroke and 50m breaststroke, and 4th in the 100m IM and 100m freestyle; Hunter Small, 13, finished 2nd in the 100m breaststroke, and 4th in the 50m butterfly and 100m freestyle; and Luke Young, also 13, came 2nd in the 100m IM, 3rd in the 100m freestyle, 4th in the 100m backstroke and 100m breaststroke, and 5th in the 50m butterfly.

Also earning ribbons were: Jack Biggar, 11 (4th in the 50m backstroke and 50m breaststroke, 5th in the 100m freestyle and 6th in the 100m IM and 50m butterfly); McKenna Brown, 8, with a 6th place finish in the 25m backstroke;  Jack Girardi, 8, with 6th place in the 100m IM and 25m butterfly; Brianna Kita, 13, with a 6th in the 100m backstroke; Hannah Lacey, 13, with a 4th in the 100m freestyle; Nadine Osmon, 11, with 4th in the 50m butterfly and 6th in the 100m freestyle; Aynsley Persad, 13, with 4th in the 50m butterfly; and Connor Phipps, 13 with a 6th in the 100m IM.

Olivia Voisey, 10 improved her time in the 100m IM by more than 30 seconds. In addition, 25 swimmers achieved Personal Best times in 3 or more events. Of those, Morgan Allison, 11, and Trista Walsh, 12, each improved three personal best times. Samantha Bedard, Rylynn Haney and Faith Jamieson, all 11, improved their best times in four events, while Rachel Dalton, 12; Erin Lacey, 10; and Nes Tulang, 11, swam to personal best times in each of their five events.

Also swimming were Caelan Babenko, 9; Dylan Cloud, 11; Rebecca Haney, 8; Zoe Little, 13; Nik Mukherjee, 9; and Sean Phipps, 10.

The Sarnia Y Rapids 1 swimmers are coached by Sue Athanasopoulos. This group’s next meet is in Chatham on April 14.
