Canadian Women are Golden

Team Canada U22 Ladies won the gold medal at the 2013 Meco Cup that took place Jan. 3-6 in Memmingen and Füssen, Germany.

The annual Meco Cup is held in Germany and Switzerland that features five senior women national teams and Canada’s U22 development team. In the tournament’s 10 year history (formally known as the MLP Cup and Air Canada Cup), Canada’s U22 won gold every year except last year where they had to settle for the bronze.

Included on Team Canada's roster was Sarnia Native
Carolyne Prevost.  This is the third gold medal for Prevost on the U22 development team winning gold in 2010, 2011 & 2013.   Prevost was invited to play in 2012 but was unable to attend.

 In the 2013 tournament Team Canada went undefeated.   In Exhibition Canada defeated Germany by a score of 8 - 1.  Prevost scored on a penalty shot during the game.  In round robin action Canada shut out Switzerland 4 - 0.  In the third game Canada also earned a shutout with a final 2 - 0.  Both Canadian goals were scored in the second period with Prevost scoring late in the period.  The final gold medal game was against Russia and the Canadian team dominated and won with a final score of 8 - 3.

Prevost scored an empty net goal in the final game.

“It was a very mature team,” head coach Pierre Alain said. “They handled everything perfectly. The group was very good and team-building was very good.”


In other Canadian Women's Hockey action, Team Canada won the 2013 IIHF Ice Hockey U18 Women’s World Championship that was held in Heinola, Finland.


Team Canada went undefeated in the tournament with wins over Hungary (4-1), Finland (4-0) and Germany (7-0).  Canada earned a bye to the semi-finals where they defeated Sweden 7 - 2.  In the gold medal game they went up against Team USA. 


Jennifer Ryan scored for the U.S. in the last two minutes of the first period. Canada's goal was scored by Catherine Dubois (Quebec City, Que) in the third period with just :13 seconds left in regulation time that sent the game into overtime.  In overtime with :58 seconds off the clock  Karly Heffernan (St. Albert, Alta) scored to give Canada the 2 - 1 victory over the United States.
