Petrolia Squires Defeat Tavistock in OT

With 3.8 seconds remaining on the clock in overtime former Legionnaire Shawn Waldie scored to give the Squires a 5 - 4 win over the Tavistock Royals in Western Ontario Athletic Association Senior AA hockey league action.

 

 

The Squires took a 1 - 0 lead after the first period with Kyle Quinn scoring. Jeremiah Goodacre scored in the second for Petrolia to take a 2 - 0 lead. 

 

Craig Thompson narrowed the gap for Tavistock with 3:06 left in the period.  Second period ended with the Squires leading 2 - 1.

 

At 4:05 in the third period Greg Virgo scored on the power play for Tavistock to even the score.  Action continued and as the game was nearing an end the Squires scored two quick goals the first at 16:04 by Rob Vanwysenberghe and the second at 17:50 by Tyler Cicchini.

With the Squires leading 4 - 2 and the game coming to a close the Royals battled back and scored two last minute goals sending the game into over time. 

 

The first Tavistock goal was scored with :42 seconds remaining by Jeff Roes and the tying goal with :20 seconds remaining by Greg Virgo.

 

 


 

Goaltending was outstanding at both ends of the rink.  Chris Houle earned the win with a total of 32 saves.  Doug Groenestege took the loss with 39 saves.

 

The Squires are in 4th place in the standings race with a record of 12-7-0-1 with a total of 25 points.  Tavistock is in third place 13-4-0-3 with a total of 29 points.

 

The Squires are back in action tonight when they travel to Tillsonburg for a 7:30 puck drop. This is an important game as Tillsonburg is on the Squires doorstep in 5th spot with 23 points.

  • Mark Dunlop recently signed by the Squires was in action tonight. Dunlop won the Bavarian Champion last season as a member with ERV Schweinfurt. Dunlop was a former member of the Petrolia Jets, Mooretown Flags, Sarnia Blast and Squires.  Click here for complete profile summary.
