Petrolia Squires take Three Points on Weekend

In WOSAA Senior AA hockey league action the Petrolia Squires took a 10 - 2 win over the Goderich Pirates Friday night in Petrolia, then on Saturday travelled to Clinton and lost to the Radars 6 - 5 in overtime.

 

At home on Friday the Squires took a 3 - 1 lead after the first period.  Christ McGuffin scored two goals in the first and Adam McCallum scored the single.  Dan Dery scored for the Pirates.

 

In the second period the Squires scored two unanswered goals with Chris McGuffin scoring his third of the night for the hat trick and Scott McPhail adding a single.

 

In the third period the Squires started things off and took a 6 - 1 lead with Jason McPhail scoring a power play goal.  The Pirates answered back with their final goal of the night by Glen McCarron.   The Squires then went on and scored four consecutive goals to finish the game.  James Edgar, Breydan Belan, Jeremiah Goodacre and Scott McPhail each scored one in the final four.

 

Despite the loss Goderich goalie Rich Wigmore was outstanding making a total of 53 saves in the game as the Squires outshot the Pirates 63 - 29.   Matt Slotwinski earned the win for the Squires.

 

Goderich went scoreless on three power play attempts, Petrolia scored one on four opportunities.

 

In the 6 - 5 overtime loss against Clinton the Squires battled back from a 5 - 2 deficit after two periods and scored three in the third to tie.

Scott McPhail scored both goals for the Squires, one in the first and one in the second.  Clinton scored three in the first and two in the second.  Brad Burton scored two with Kyle Provily, Mike Gillen and Brenden Dale scored for Clinton in the first two periods.

 

In the third period the Squires scored three unanswered goals for the tie with Chris McPhail, Chris McGuffin and Tyler Haddon scoring.

 

Clinton scored in over time to take the win.

 

Shots on goal were even with 40 each.  Netminder Chris Houle took the loss for the Squires, Tommy Lee earned the win.

 

Clinton went 0 for 5 on the power play, Petrolia went 1 for 6.

Next home game for the Squires is Fri., Jan 25 vs Komoka Klassics 8 pm at Greenwood Rec Centre.

The Alumni game previously announce against the Detroit Red Wings Alumni has been postponed until April.
