Eight Rapids Swimmers Earn First Place Finishes

Eight of the 32 swimmers from the Sarnia Y Rapids 1 Swim Team who participated in a recent St. Clair Erie Aquatic League (SEAL) swim meet in Blenheim finished first in at least one event. In addition, more than 20 swimmers achieved Personal Best times in 3 or more events.

Among the 7-and-under boys, Breadan Babenko and Adam Voisey each finished 1st – Breadan in the 25m backstroke and Adam in the 25m freestyle. Jack Biggar, 10 came 1st in the 50m breaststroke, 2nd in the 100m Individual Medley (IM), 3rd in the 50m backstroke and 100m freestyle and 5th in the 50m butterfly. Rachel Dalton, 12, earned 1st in the 200m freestyle, and took more than 30 seconds off her seed time. Brianna Kita, 13, finished 1st in the 200m IM. Allie Rawson, 7, placed 1st in the 25m butterfly and added a 2nd in the 25m backstroke and 25m freestyle, and 4th in the 25m breaststroke. Her brother, Kaiden, 10, finished 1st in the 100m IM, 2nd in the 50m backstroke, 3rd in the 50m butterfly and 50m breaststroke and 4th in the 100m freestyle. Hunter Small, 13, claimed 1st in the 200m freestyle and 200m IM events, and finished in the Top 5 in each of his other events.

Six other swimmers finished in the Top 3: Dariel Gomez, 15, placed 2nd in the 100m breaststroke, and 3rd in the 200m freestyle; Burak Gurtekin, 8, finished 2nd in the 25m backstroke and 3rd in the 100m IM; Hannah Lacey, 12, came 3rd in the 200m butterfly; Nadine Osmon, 11, finished 2nd in the 100m freestyle and 3rd in the 50m butterfly and 50m backstroke; Hayden Scott, 9, placed 2nd in the 100m IM, 25m butterfly and 50m freestyle, and 3rd in the 25m breaststroke; and Luke Young, 13, came 2nd in the 200m IM, and 3rd in the 100m backstroke and 100m breaststroke.

Also earning ribbons were: Abby Allardyce, 11 (5th in the 50m breaststroke); Ciara Brown, 10 (4th in the 50m backstroke and 50m breaststroke, and 5th in the 100m IM and 100m freestyle);  Sean Foster, 9 (4th in the 100m IM); Taylor Marut, 8 (6th in the 100m IM); Sydney Moraal, 9 (4th in the 25m backstroke and 6th in the 50m freestyle); Nik Mukherjee, 9 (6th in the 25m backstroke); Connor Phipps, 13 (4th in the 100m breaststroke, 5th in the 100m backstroke and 100m freestyle and 6th in the 100m IM); Annabelle Rayson, 7 (6th in the 25m butterfly and 25m backstroke); and Nes Tulang, 11 (50m butterfly).

McKenna Brown, 8, and Dylan Cloud, 11, each improved their times in 4 events, while Olivia Voisey, 10 improved her times in three. Jack Girardi, 8, had Top 10 finishes in each of his events.

Also swimming were Faith Jamieson, 11; Erin Lacey, 10; Zoe Little, 13; Aynsley Persad, 13; and Sean Phipps, 9.

The Sarnia Y Rapids 1 swimmers are coached by Sue Athanasopoulos. This group’s next meet is in Aylmer on February 10.
