The Alvinston Indians travelled to Springfield on Tuesday evening, to face the upstart Brewers. Springfield sent veteran lefthander Todd Winkworth to the mound, while the Indians sent young righthander Jeff LYons to the pitching circle.
The game was scoreless through two innings, when Andy Triest singled and stole second base in the third inning, and Joe Triest followed with a walk. Andy advanced to third base via a wild pitch, and would score on a sacrifice fly by Alix Chisholm to centrefield. Jeff Lyons then came to the plate for Alvinston, and hit a triple to score Joe Triest, for a 2-0 Alvinston lead. Springfield threatened to score in the third inning, leaving runners on second and third, but finally capitalized in the fourth, when they were able to score an unearned run. Finch drove in McCallum for the Brewers for their first run in the contest. Springfield threatened again in the fifth, but once again failed to score, after some good defence by Alvinston ended their threat, as they stranded runners on first and third.
Meanwhile, the Alvinston bats fell silent, and this proved costly, as Springfield finally got to Indians starter Jeff Lyons in the seventh inning, when a Todd Winkworth triple down the right field line, scored both Kenny Antone who lead off the inning with a walk, and Mike Maris who reached base via a hit by pitch. With these two runs scoring for Springfield, Alvinston suffered a 3-2 loss, as Springfield stormed back in the final inning.
Lyons was the hard luck loser for Alvinston, tossing 6 innings, and allowing 3 runs (2 earned), 5 hits, and 3 walks, while striking out 6. Todd Winkworth earned the win for Springfield going seven strong innings, and allowing 2 earned runs, 7 hits, and only 1 walk, with 4 strikeouts.
Up next for the Indians Tuesday Aug 6th In Glencoe 8 PM.
