Sarnia Imperials Dominate in Home Opener

The Sarnia Imperials dominated over the Oakville Longhorns in their home opener Saturday night before 364 fans at Norm Perry Park in Northern Football Conference action. 

 

Julian Shadd-Gentry led the Imperials to a 61 - 10 win running a total of 176 yards and three touchdowns.  Kevin Allaer kicked in two field goals the first a 40 yard and the second what is to believe his personal best of  47 yards.  Allaer also kicked in seven of eight convert attempts.

"Julian he's the man he comes to play." Head Coach Jake Cherski said "We told the boys at half time to put on the gas, there's no cruise control today with this team and that's what we did, we put the foot on the gas and he [Julian Shadd-Gentry] drove it.

 

Sarnia opened the scoring on Allaer's first field goal early in the first quarter.  Oakville came back and tied with 2:11 left in the quarter when Daran Harry kicked in a 21 yard field goal.

 

Three minutes into the second quarter Shadd-Gentry ran 15 yards for the first Imperial touchdown. Kick by Allaer for the extra point was good and the Imperials took a 10 - 3 lead.  The second touchdown was scored by Derek Hurlock on a 17 yard run and convert. 

 

The Imperials went up 24 - 3 with 3:05 remaining in the second quarter after they recovered an onside kick for the first down. The Imperials drove the ball ball down to the 38 yard line and Shadd-Gentry took the pass back and ran in for the touchdown. Kick for the extra point was good. 

 

With just 1:16 off the clock Norm Yellowman intercepted a pass on the 28 yard line and ran in for the touch down. With the extra point earned the Imperials went up 31 - 3 to finish the first half.

In the second half Allaer was successful kicking his second field goal to put the Imperials up 34 - 3. Quarterback Pascal Plante who replaced Ricky Gorton in the second half and threw a 39 yard pass to Matt Goulais who took it in for the touchdown and the convert was good to extend the lead to 41 - 3.

 

In the fourth quarter Oakville lone touchdown came at 11:43 after a 12 yard run by Lyndell Merraro. Daran Harry kicked in the extra point to give the Longhorns 10 points.

 

The Imperials continue to dominate and went up 47 - 10 after Quarterback Plante ran in for the touchdown. After a bad snap on the convert attempt no extra point was earned on the play.

 

 

Bo Hunter picked off a Longhorn pass and ran down 59 yards. Two plays later Shadd-Gentry took the pass back and ran up the middle for his third touchdown of the game.  Allaer's kick was good and the Imperials increased their score to 54 - 10.

 

The final touchdown of the night was scored with 1:40 remaining in the final quarter  after Dan White intercepted the pass at the 42 yard line.  Three plays later Cory Johnson took the pass back and drove it up the middle for a 34 yard run and scored the final touchdown.  Allaer scored his seventh and final convert of the night to end the game with a final score of 61 - 10.

 

"I thought we played ok we have a lot to improve still" Cherski said "We are coming up against the Sault and Tri City Durham our next three home games so we got a lot of work to do still to be a major contender in this league."

 

The Imperials are now 2 - 2 for the season and are back at home on Saturday July 6th when they take on Sault Ste Marie who are now 4 - 1 for the season.

 

 

The Imperials are looking to fill the stands for a grand.  The team will give away $1,000.00 when 1000 people pay at the gate.  Cherski is sure that Sarnia fans will come out and support the team.
