A Colossal Week in Atom House League Hockey
 monday march 4, 2013

by Lincoln Simpson

A colossal week in Atom House League hockey this week as the teams played off in their second double header of the year. In the morning, McDonald's Green and White, McDonald's Grey and Red, McDonald's Yellow and Orange, and McDonald's Black and Blue took to the ice for the morning half of this exciting Saturday action.

The McDonald's Green and White teams set their alarms early for the 8 O’clock ice time. Green had a huge first period with four goals from four different skaters. Costa Columbo opened the scoring with 6:37 left in the first. Minutes later, Brady Krasinkiewicz stretched the lead to 2-0. Mitch Lucier and Jack Symington teamed up to help the cause. And with 1:05 left in the frame, Aiden Matuzic made it 4-0. The only goal of the second period came from Jack Symington with Brady Krasinkiewicz on the assist. In the third, White’s scorers finally got on the board. Thomas Field scored unassisted minutes into the final period, and minutes later, Greg VanHeyst took the feed from Chris Blair to make it 5-2. But with 3:11 left, Aiden Matuzic notched his second of the game with the assist to Josh Gibson. And with his second and third goals, to finish the hat-trick, Jack Symington scored two late markers to ice the game 8-2 for Green.

The second game of the morning featured McDonald's Grey and Red in a real barn burner. The first two periods of the game went scoreless in an incredible defensive chess match and a goaltending battle between Noah Ferrera and Josh Craig. But in the third, the teams started lighting the lamp. Not one minute into the third period, Aiden Healey sniped home the opening goal of the game for Red. Not two minutes later Austin Bishop finished the tic-tac-toe play from Lucas Davidson and Tyler Caron to add the insurance marker. But with 4:30 left in the game, Kyle Fraser cut the lead to 2-1. And that was all she wrote for the Grey team as the comeback ran out of time and the game finished in a 2-1 Red victory.

The third game McDonald's Yellow and Orange played a very exciting game, complete with a photo finish. But we begin in the first period where Yellow’s Alex Weir pounded home the dish from Dawson Currie. The score remained 1-0 for the remainder of the period. However, in the second, Zach Woods tied the game for Orange with a dandy unassisted goal. In the third, Yellow took back the lead with a beauty from Alexander Dafoe. Ever resilient though, Orange once again tied it up at 2-2 with a marker coming from Jimmy Bennett. The tie remained until with 2:45 left in the game, Hudson Laur lit the lamp with a critical goal off the feed from Nolan Jennings. The game ended 3-2 for Yellow.

In the final game of the morning, McDonald's Black and Blue faced off in a scoring display. In the first,
Sebastian Fraser scored the game opener unassisted, the players went to center ice, the puck was dropped and Fraser took it in alone again to score his second goal in under 30 seconds. Blue answered with a goal each from Jack Hutchinson and Christian D’Agostini. And with 2:00 left in the first, Jacob Roe made it 3-2 for Black. In the second, the only goal scored was off the stick of Sebastian Fraser to complete the hat-trick. The third period proved to be a big period for both teams. Blue’s two goals came from D’Agostini (his second) and Toby Crossland. But it was the Man in Black who stole the show. With 9:17 left, Sebastian Fraser scored his fourth. Then with 5:59 left, Fraser scored his fifth goal. And I’ll give you a guess as to who scored with 1:57. Fraser completed the oh so rare double hat trick.
