Petrolia Squires Win Home Opener in Shoot Out

In an exciting home opener on Friday night the Petrolia Squires and the Clinton Radars were tied 6 - 6 at the end of regulation time and the Squires came out on top winning in shoot out 7 - 6 to open their WOAA Sr AA Hockey league season.

Jesse Drytak gave the Squires a 1 - 0 lead with eight minutes remaining in the period. But before the period was completed the Squires gave up 3 goals and the Radars took a 3 - 1 lead heading into the second.  Kyle Provily, Tyler Doig (PP) and Ty Elligsen scored for the Radars.

In a back and forth second period the Squires narrowed the gap on a goal scored by Shawn Waldie.  The Radars went on and widened their lead with Doig scoring his second of the night. :44 seconds later the Squires scored with Chris Wilson scoring, but the Radars answered back just under two minutes later with Deryk Whitehead scoring.  The Squires continued to fight back and with :32 seconds remaining in the period Justin Smith scored for the Squires and the period ended with Clinton leading 5 - 4.

Two back to back goals late in the third by Norm Leger gave the Squires the lead for the first time in the game.  However with :44 seconds remaining in the game Brendan Dale's goal evened the score sending the game into over time.

In over time both sides went scoreless and Leger came up with the winning goal in shoot out to give the Squires their first win of the season.

Chris Houle took the win in net for the Squires with 48 saves.  Tommy Lee got the start making 23 saves on 24 shots for the Radars but was later replaced at the start of the third by Josh Nurse who made 12 saves on 15 shots.

The Squires are back in action tonight (Saturday October 5) when they travel to Tavistock for a 7:00 pm start.
