Rapids Swimmer Brown Sinks Competition

Ciara Brown, 11, of the Sarnia Y Rapids 1 Swim Team earned three individual first place finishes and one second at the first swim meet of the St. Clair Erie Aquatic League (SEAL) season in Aylmer in October. She was joined by teammates Samantha Bedard, Jack Biggar and Kaiden Rawson, all 11, in winning the 10- and 11-year-old 200m freestyle relay. Samantha added a 2nd place in the 100m freestyle and 3rd in the 50m backstroke to her relay win, while Jack came 2nd in the 50m breaststroke. Jack Girardi, 8, also earned a first place ribbon, in the 50m freestyle.

In total, 33 Rapids swimmers participated in the meet.  Eleven-year-old Diane Clarke finished 3rd in the 50m breaststroke, while 12-year-old Dylan Cloud placed 3rd in the 50m butterfly, 100m breaststroke and 100m freestyle. Connor Phipps, 13, came 3rd in the 100m breaststroke.

In the 7-and-under category, new swimmer Kate Bedard, 6, cracked the Top 10 in the 25m backstroke and 25m freestyle. Travis Kozak, 7, finished 5th in the 25m breaststroke, and 6th in the 25m backstroke.

Among the 8-year-olds, Braedon Babenko came 4th in the 25m backstroke and 6th in the 25m breaststroke. Rebecca Haney shaved more than 15 seconds off her personal best time in the 50m freestyle from last season. Allie Rawson’s time in the 25m breaststroke earned her a Top 10 finish. Annabelle Rayson improved in all her events over her personal best times from last season. Vanessa Dyck and Gabrion Tulang also swam, in their first meet as part of the team.

Nine-year-olds McKenna Brown and Nik Mukherjee improved their personal best times in each of their individual events. Zakk Kozak earned a Top 10 finish in the 25m butterfly in his first meet with the team. Taylor Marut earned a 5th place finish in the 50m freestyle and 6th in the 25m backstroke. Also swimming were Devan Dyck, Sarah Phipps and Peter Valdellon.

Among the 10-year-olds from Sarnia, Caelan Babenko placed 6th in the 50m backstroke while Sean Phipps placed 4th in the 50m backstroke and 5th in the 50m butterfly, 50m breaststroke and 100m freestyle. Olivia Conroy also swam a strong meet.

Gregory Dietrich, 11, placed in the Top 10 in the 50m backstroke and 100m freestyle, while Erin Lacey, also 11, earned a Top 10 spot in the 50m backstroke and 100m freestyle.

Twelve-year-olds Rylynn Haney and Nes Tulang, and Rachel Dalton, Hannah Lacey, and Trista Walsh, all 13, swam in a very competitive field. Rachel took 8 seconds off her personal best in the 100m breaststroke to finish 7th, Hannah came 4th in the 100m freestyle, and Trista improved her times from last season in the 100m backstroke and 100m freestyle.

The Sarnia Y Rapids 1 swimmers are coached by Sue Athanasopoulos. This group’s next meet is in Leamington on November 24.
