The Sarnia FC U11B team, coached by Jeff Charron and Jamie Lopes, travelled to Woodstock and London last weekend to participate in the annual Challenge Cup tournament. After finishing third in their division this season, with 9 wins, 4 losses and 3 ties, the team was ready to show the rest of the league just how hard they’d been working throughout the season.

Sarnia took on Byron FC in their first game of the tournament and came away with a nail bitting 2 – 1 win in a shootout early Saturday morning.

This set them up for a minimum of 3 games on Sunday. In their second game, FC took on the Southwest Lightning and held on for another 2 – 1 in regulation time. Game 3 saw them take on this season’s second place, the German Canadian FC Firebolts. Goaltender, Colton Williamson would once again lead his team to victory with another shootout win 1 – 0.

The win gave Sarnia a berth in the Championship game versus the #1 team, the London Athletic Spartans. After suffering just their first lost of the season earlier in the tournament to the Lambeth Lancers, the Spartans needed to win 3 straight games to earn a spot in the Championship game versus the Sarnia FC White team. The Championship game also went to a shootout with the London scoring the tying goal with just seconds left in the game. After two 5 minute overtime, the teams found themselves still tied at 1. Unfortunately, the Spartans would outscore Sarnia 3 – 2 and take the championship 2 – 1.
