The 2013 Paton Control's U35 Men's Soccer team are this year's SMISL Cosmos Cup Champions following a dramatic shootout win over City Centre Car Wash Wed. Sept. 25 at Norm Perry Park.
The game was a quick-paced, back and forth game with several chances for both teams in both halves.
After 45 minutes the score was 1-1 with the Paton goal being scored by Mr.Dependable Julian Gomez.
The second half was very similar as the first half with close man-to-man marking and several scoring chances. City Centre Car Wash scored about 5 minutes into to the second half putting pressure on Paton Controls to equalize.
With less than 4 minutes remaining in regulation time and in dramatic fashion, defensive stalwart Mike Griffin, let go with a laser of a shot from
35 yards out that bulged the top corner of the old onion bag to tie the game at 2-2.
Following 20 minutes of scoreless OT, the Cosmos Cup Champion was going to be decided by penalty shots, just like it was 2 weeks earlier between the same 2 teams in the Playoff Championship.
When the dust settled and the penalty shots were all taken, Paton Controls emerged victorious with a score of 5-4 in penalty shots.
Scoring on their penalty shot for Paton Control's were Scott Devlin, Tom Neinheis, Julian Gomez, Erin White and Man of the Match Mike Griffin.
Paton Control's goalkeeper Jamie McCahill, was superb in net stopping 2 penalty shots and making several saves during the game.
This game completes the second consecutive sweep of all 4 trophies and completes not only a tremendous season but solidifies Paton Control's as a dynasty not seen in these parts in any sport in a long time if ever.
