Mooretown Flags First Exhibition Game

friday august 29, 2014

The Mooretown Flags Jr C training camp got underway this week and on Thursday night the Flags hosted the Dresden Kings in their first exhibition game.

The Flags lost 4 - 2 but Head Coach Gino Vitella was pleased with the outcome despite the loss.

"It was a strong game." Vitella said "Considering we had one vet in the line up they all worked pretty hard and with the other team having a lot of half visors out there, they had to have at least half vets playing."

The Flags two goals came in the first period with Devin Brown assisted by Parker Gilhuly and Justin Melo scoring the first goal and the second goal was scored by Gilhuly from Austin Hewton.

Dresden two goals came in the second and third period by Sam McPherson, David Vergeer, Will Tetzlaff and Ross Krieger.

Earning the shutout in net in the first period was Nolan Nicholson.  James Caron and Noah Melanson each allowed two goals.

Mooretown took twenty nine minutes in penalties on ten infractions.  Dresden took ten minutes on five infractions.

Mooretown went zero for three on the power play, Dresden scored once on seven opportunities.

After the game Vitella announced that on Wednesday the Flags signed veteran Brett Thompson and former Lambton AAA Major Midget Colin Osler  and after Thursday game two newcomers to the team Austin Hewton and Brent Blaise were being signed.

Vitella is feeling really good about the upcoming season. "After seeing that showing of guys that we think are going in spots and putting our vets back in I think we are going to be a strong team."

Training camp continues and the team next exhibition game is in Wallaceburg on Sept 3, then on Friday Sept 5th they are in Dresden and back home on Sept 6th when they host Wallaceburg.  All games begin at 7:30 pm.

The Flags home/season opener in Great Lakes Jr C League is against the Wallaceburg Lakers on Saturday September 13 at the Mooretown Sports Complex with a 7:30pm start.
