The Mooretown Flags Jr. C Hockey Organization kicked off the 2014 - 15 season last night in the Flags boardroom at the Moore Sports Complex with the announcement and signing of 6 players to the team. Returning to the team are Dan Lumley, Matt Brandon, David Addley, Ryan Lyle, Sam Jasmin and goaltender Brandon Johnson.

The Flags have been hosting summer skates where they have had a good turn out with approximately 40 to 50 skaters participating.

One of the benefits that new Head Coach Gino Vitella brings to the Flags is that he has been coaching the 97's for a number of years.

"That's definitely a benefit for the new coaching staff and myself. Vitella said  "Brad Riley and I have been coaching the 97's for a number of years and so knowing the 97's and 98's we know what they can bring to the table."

One of the goals Vitella will look to improve on this coming season is their defensive end.

"Last year they were allowing 5 goals, scoring 4 themselves then losing by that one goal so we need to cut down on the goals against. The first thing is to learn a better and stronger defensive system and go from there."

The team also officially named Dan Lumley as Captain for the 2014-15 season.

"I've been here for 4 years I'm excited to finally have the letter on my jersey." Lumley said

Last season the Flags went 20-17-1-2 and ended in sixth place at the end of the regular schedule. The Flags were eliminated in the playoff quarterfinals four games to two against Blenheim.

"Hopefully I will lead the boys right and have a good year with them."  Lumley said of his goals for the upcoming season. "We did pretty good in the playoffs last year, Blenheim was tough. Hopefully we have another great season again and get above the position we were last year."

Coach Vitella gave high praise for his newly appointed captain.

"Dan has great Leadership qualities." Vitella said "From the first skate he came out and took the leadership right away. Asking questions and making sure guys were doing the right things out there."

Final news of the night was the presentation of the Flags New Third Jersey.

New General Manager John Baker explained the reason behind the new Jersey was because of the Moore Minor who adopted a name change at their annual meeting to Mooretown Jr. Flags and the girls to Lady Flags starting in the 2014-15 season.

"Moore Minor Hockey have talked about 5 or 6 years moving to the Jr Flags to be in line with the Jr C program. When they changed their colours they went with white and black so we added the third jersey to mix in with the Minor hockey change."

The Flags will continue using their original red and white as their primary shirts for home and away and will incorporate the new jersey on special occasons.

Baker has had a close tie and has been involved with the Moore Minor Hockey Association for several years and one of Baker's goals is for the Flags and the Minor Hockey Association work more closely together.

"I have coached a lot of kids that come up into the Flags system and with the third Jersey and the Minor moving to Junior Flags we're trying to create a closer working relationship. My role will be a big part of that because of my involvement with the Minor Hockey over the years"

The Flags main camp begins on Aug 26.

"It will be a compressed camp and a lot of things will happen really quickly so the intensity will be a high rate from the start." Baker said
"We're two days of skate then we are right into Exhibition games.
