The Alvinston Indians traveled to Springfield on Tuesday evening, to face the Springfield Brewers in St. Thomas and District Men's Fastball league action. Shaun Winship took the mound for Springfield, while Alvinston countered with their ace Kyle Crawford.
Both pitchers were impressive through three innings, however, Alvinston finally counted two runs in the top of the fourth inning. Aaron Stocking walked, stole second base, advanced to third via an error, and scored on a line drive by Brad Cooper. Craig Lyons then tripled into the gap to score Cooper.
This would be all the scoring on the evening, as the Indians shutout Springfield 2-0. Crawford earned the shutout win for the Indians pitching 6 2/3 innings, allowing one hit, two walks, and fanning 15 Brewers on the evening. Jeff Lyons earned the save striking out the only batter he faced.
On Thursday evening, the Indians were on home turf to battle the visiting Glencoe Astros. Taylor Degraw started for Glencoe, while Jeff Lyons started for Alvinston.
Alvinston got going early, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Craig Lyons walked, Jamie Shields hit an infield single , and Jeff Lyons doubled into the gap to score both C. Lyons and Shields.
In the top of the fourth inning, Glencoe finally got their offence going,when a leadoff double by Paul Johnson, led to a single up the middle by Kevin Eichenberger to score Johnson. However, Alvinston would reply with one run of their own in the bottom of the fourth to restore the 2 run lead. Eric Hyatt doubled, was advanced to third on a groundout, and scored on a wild pitch.
In the fifth inning, Glencoe's offence would make some serious noise. Cody Campbell singled, and came around to score on a Chris Sheppard hit to the fence. The next batter was Paul Johnson, and he hurt the Indians again, as he smacked a two run homerun, to put Glencoe in front 4-3.
However, Alvinston would answer again in their half of the fifth inning. C. Lyons hit a timely bunt single to lead things off for Alvinston, and Jamie Shields hit a sharp single to put runners on first and third. Now with one out, Aaron Sotcking walked to load the bases. Lyons would score on a pass ball to tie the game, and then Joe Triest put the Indians in front, with a single to score Shields. Now 5-4, Jeff Lyons went to work on the mound for Alvinston, and struckout all three batters he faced.
Andy Triest then came to the plate and singled up the middle to get things going for Alvinston in the bottom of the sixth. Triest would then steal second, advance to third on a groundout, and score on a pass ball, to put the Indians up 6-4, which was the final score.
Jeff Lyons was the winning pitcher for Alvinston, pitching all seven innings, and allowing 4 runs, 3 earned runs, 6 hits, 5 walks, and striking out 13 Astros on the evening.
With the two wins this week, Alvinston is now off to a record of 7-1 to start the season, and they stand in first place in the league to this point in the early season. The Indians look to ramp up their game, in the weeks to come!
