The SMAA Football
Association took to
the field at Norm
Perry Park on Monday
night.
In the opener the
Mechanical
Contractor's
Association Toros
took on the Sarnia
Police Association
Tiger Sharks. Fans
were treated to a
hard hitting opening
half in this game.
The teams exchanged
lost fumbles on
their opening
possessions. The
second time the
Sharks had the ball,
they drove the
length of the field
and got on the board
first, thanks to a 1
yard run by Dylan
Gallant. Gallant's
convert had the
Tiger Sharks up
8-0. The Toros did
not panic and
responded with a
long methodical
drive on their next
possession that
culminated on a 4
yard slash off
tackle by Cameron
Havers. Zachary
Tremblay's convert
knotted the game at
8. The score
remained this way
until halftime. The
complexion of the
game changed in the
first 5 minutes of
the second half.
Brett Riley returned
the opening kickoff
80 yards for a
major. The Toros
recovered their
ensuing kickoff and
two plays later
Riley struck again,
this time on a 52
yard quarterback
keeper. Tremblay
converted both these
majors as the Toros
opened up an 18
point lead they
wouldn't
relinquish. Each
team counted a pair
of majors in the
remainder of the
second half, the
Tiger Sharks on runs
of 5 and 44 yards by
Gallant and the
Toros on a 70 yard
run by Havers and a
35 yard pass
completion to
Coleton Phillips by
Riley. Gallant
kicked a convert for
the Sharks and
Tremblay 2 more for
the Toros.
Turnovers plagued
the Optimist Club of
Sarnia Grizzlies in
their tilt with the
Mammoet Crane
Incorporated
Mammoths. The
Mammoths recovered a
kickoff, two fumbles
and had one
interception. Joel
Card and Hunter
Hendrie had 2
touchdowns apiece,
Card on scampers of
44 and 52 yards,
Hendrie on runs from
14 and 44 yards
out. Ethan Pearson
added a major on a
60 yard dash and
Aiden Wildfong also
took it to the house
from 39 yards.
Justin Cain added 2
converts. The
Grizzlies showed
courage and
determination, never
giving up. Their
defensive play
improved in the
second half and
their offense moved
the ball with
greater consistency
as the game
progressed.
Quarterback Garrett
Patterson had many
punishing runs for
first downs.
