The NFC West
division champs came out to
prove a point and boy did they
ever and downed Sault Ste Marie
42 - 7 Saturday afternoon
at Norm Perry Park.
Kevin Allaer started off the
scoring nailing an easy 29 yard
field goal at 5:30 into the game
then 4 minutes later the defense
took over and pretty much
dictated the rest of the game
with a 2 point safety as QB Matt
Bucham for the Sault tried to
corral a bad snap and decided to
kick it out of the end zone. At
the very end of the first
quarter the exact same thing
happen while the gold and red
were putting on extreme pressure
yet again and like the last time
bad snap and kicked out by QB
Matt Bucham. The quarter ended
with a mere 7 point lead but
things going in the right
direction.
2:33 into the second quarter the
Sault had the Imperials pinned
down looking for another field
goal but this time Kevin Allaer
pulled a rabbit out of his hat
and they, with a little
trickery, holder Jim Purves
found Terry Mauldin all alone
for a 33 yard pass for the
major. As both defenses played
well for the rest of the half
the Sault took a turn and got an
interception and touchdown run
to close the score to a 14-7
Sarnia lead at the half.
Opening up the third quarter is
where the mighty Imps gained
momentum and never looked back.
QB, Pat Wright going 13 for 24
for 165 yards found Ryan
Lounsbury for not one but two
back to back touchdowns, one for
25 and another for 13 yards.
Those added to Lounsbury's
numbers to finish the day at 7
for 10 and 92 yards.
To finish off the scoring in the
3rd quarter the defense came up
big again and recovered a fumble
in the end zone and coming up
from the bottom of the pile with
the ball and a smile was Floyd
Graham, Kevin Allaer again
perfect on the convert making
all 5 for the day and at the end
of the third quarter 35-7 for
the home team.
The Sarnia Imperials were asked
if they would run the clock down
with no stoppages and the
coaching staff agreed. The
Sault had a great drive going
for the entire quarter topping
it off with a fumble on a hit
from John Bain and Chris
VanMeppellen Scheppink picked it
up and ran it back surrounded by
7 red and gold guards making
sure he reached the end zone.
That would end the scoring for
the game as the Sault attempted
another drive to which they came
up short as time was not on
their side.
The Imperials are back at home
on Saturday August 8 for their
first home semi final playoff
date in modern history, their
second in three years and are
hoping for some huge support
from the city to push them over
the Ottawa Invaders team in
which they lost to back in week
4 to a hard fought 21-3 loss.
Game time is set at 7pm Norm
Perry Park. Adults 7.00 students
3.00 and children under 5 are
free.
