The Alvinston Indians
participated in the OASA
Great Lakes Provincial
tournament in Tavistock July
10-12. Their 3rd place
finish earned them a birth
to the Senior Men’s Canadian
Fastball Championships in
Saint Claire, Quebec at the
end of August.
The Indians would drop their
first game to the Kitchener
Cubs 9-2. Rory Miller would
take the loss for Alvinston,
while Jon Baker recorded the
win for Kitchener. Dan
Mitchell would finish 2/2
with a homerun and 2 RBI for
the Cubs.
In game 2, the Indians would
send Travis Jones to the
mound to face the Elmira
Expos. The Indians opened
the scoring in the 2nd
inning, after Ryan Chapman
singled to start the inning,
and would come around to
score on a 2 out single by
Brad Cooper. They would add
to the lead with 2 more runs
in the 3rd, on a sac fly by
Rowan Lam, and RBI single by
Chapman. Elmira answered
quickly with 2 runs in their
half to make the score 3-2
after 3 innings. After
Alvinston added one more run
in the top of the 7th,
Elmira pushed the game to
extra innings when Dan
Martin hit a 2 run homerun
to tie the game 4-4.
Alvinston continued to push
the offence, scoring 3 runs
in the 8th on an error and
RBI singles by Jamie Shields
and Justin Krulicki. With a
7-4 lead, Ben Hodgins was
able to retire the Expos in
order in the bottom of the
8th, securing the win for
Alvinston. Ryan Chapman
finished 4/4 for the Indians
with 2 runs scored and an
RBI.
Alvinston faced off against
the Shakespeare Falcons in
Game 3. Rory Miller silenced
the Falcon bats over 5
innings, throwing a no
hitter in a 7-0 victory,
allowing only batter to
reach base. Craig Buttar
sparked the offence for the
Indians reaching base 3
times with 3 runs scored.
With a spot in the semi
final secured, the Indians
faced the Great Lakes
Pirates in their final game
of the round robin. Both
pitchers were excellent, and
the Indians were able to
close out a 2-1 victory. Ben
Hodgins picked up the win
for Alvinston allowing 1 run
on 5 hits, while walking 2
and striking out 8. Caleb
Keeshig was also effective
for the Pirates, allowing 2
runs (1 earned) on 5 hits,
while striking out 9.
The playoff round would see
a rematch versus the Elmira
Expos. The Indians struck
early scoring 3 runs in the
bottom of the 1st on a 3 run
homerun by Jeff Lyons. The
Elmira bats would slowly
come alive adding 2 runs in
the 3rdand 4th followed by 3
more in the 5th inning
capped off by a two run
homerun by Derek Martin to
take a 7-3 lead. After a
pitching change, the Expos
continued to press, adding
two more runs to take 9-3
lead heading to the bottom
of the 7th. Alvinston
threatened in the 7th,
bringing the tying run to
the plate, but a strikeout
ended the game with a score
of 9-6. Scott Lealess was
4/4 for Elmira with 2 runs
scored and 3 RBI.
The Indians finished 3-2 on
the weekend, good enough for
a 3rd place finish. The
Kitchener Cubs would defeat
the Elmira Expos 3-0 in the
Final.
