ST. MARYS –The son of a former
NHL player helped the Sarnia
Legionnaires defeat the St.
Marys Lincolns 5-2 Friday.
Nash Nienhuis – the 16-year-old
son of ex-Boston Bruin forward
Kraig Nienhuis – had an assist
in his first junior hockey game
as the Legion crew won its 22nd
game of the season.
Kraig Nienhuis played two years
of Jr. 'B' hockey in Sarnia in
the early 1980s before going on
to score 20 NHL goals in three
seasons with the Bruins.
The younger Nienhuis is a former
player of the year for his
Lambton 'AAA' midget team.
Nash, who stands 5'9 and weighs
160 pounds, is also a draft pick
of the OHL Sarnia Sting.
Nienhuis got his assist when he
let go a shot from the point.
The rebound came to Ryan
Trottier, who buried it to give
the visitors a 2-1 lead.
Trottier scored the winning
tally a few minutes after
Nienhuis had set him up for his
first of the game.
Ryan Vendramin also had two
goals for Sarnia and captain
Hunter Tyczynski had one.
Defenceman Sam McCormack
collected three assists. Alec
DeKoning, Jordan Fogarty and
Tyczynski also had helpers.
Goalie Aidan Hughes made 22
saves for his 10th win of the
campaign. The Legionnaires had
27 shots on the Lincs cage.
Sarnia assistant coach Bob
Farlow said, “It was a good
game, the boys played a solid
game. They worked hard from
start to finish.”
