After winning back to back games against the Flint Firebirds, the Sarnia Sting travelled to Windsor for a matchup with the division leading Windsor Spitfires on Hockey day in the OHL. The Sting skated away with a 5-0 victory on the back of Charlie Graham who recorded his first shutout with the Sting.

This was the third meeting between the two teams where both the Sting and the Spitfires have a win under their belts. Jordan Kyrou opened the scoring for the Sting after taking the cross ice feed from Pavel Zacha. Noah Bushnell joined in on the scoring when his dump in attempt deflected off the Spitfires defensemen and over the shoulder of Michael DiPietro. The Sting controlled the offense in the first period and lead both on the scoreboard, and the shot category outshooting the Spitfires 6-2.

The Sting continued the offensive pressure in the second period picking up right where they left off. Jakob Chychrun scored the lone goal in the second period on the powerplay that had many chances throughout the game. The Spitfires offense found a stride in the period and provided good scoring chances but were unable to beat Sting goalie Charlie Graham who was making his second start on the weekend.  The Sting outshot the Spitfires in the period 12-9.

The third period was a mirror image of the second with the Sting controlling offensive possession, and keeping the puck in the Spitfires end. A majority of the game was spend shorthanded as both teams totalled 11 penalties. Travis Konecny added to the Sting lead after finding the empty net on an assist by Charlie Graham, followed by a goal from Jordan Kyrou on the powerplay to seal the victory for the Sting.

Charlie Graham recorded his first shutout with the Sting stopping 21 shots shutting down the Spitfires offense who were coming off of a big win against the London Knights the night before. Michael DiPietro made 21 saves on 25 shots and was tested often by a Sting offense looking to earn 6 points on the weekend.

STING NOTES:

  • The Sting went 3-0-0-0 on the weekend earning 6 out of a possible 6 points to pull within 5 points of the division leading Windsor Spitfires. The Sting now lead the season series over the Spitfires 2-1.
