The Sarnia
Sting travelled to London Friday
afternoon for the first half of
a home and home against the
rival London Knights. The
Knights prevailed with the 4-3
win in overtime lead by Max
Jones who scored the overtime
winner on New Year's Eve.
This was the first time the
Sting and Knights have met this
season. The game was fast paced,
and physical from whistle to
whistle. London scored the first
goal of the game just over 5
minutes into the first period.
Mattinen added a goal on the
powerplay that did not seem to
generate much after that against
the stellar Sting penalty kill.
Nikita Korostelev scored the
lone goal for the Sting in the
first period. Korostelev has 6
goals in his last 9 games.
The second period seemed to
follow the first period with
both teams providing excellent
scoring chances at either ends
of the rink. Patrick White
scored the lone goal in the
second period assisted by
Chmelvski and King on what was a
pretty passing play that tied
the game at 2.
Matt Mistele gave the Sting the
3-2 lead just 3 minutes into the
third period. The third period
provided lots of offense from
both teams, who were hungry to
take the first game of the
battle of the 402. The Knights
answered shortly after Owen
MacDonald snuck one short side
on Kaden Fulcher, who was
looking for his third
consecutive win.
Max Jones provided the OT winner
for the Knights who skated away
with the extra point. Jakob
Chychrun took home second star
honours.
Kaden Fulcher stood tall making
key saves when needed, and kept
the Sting in the game making 26
saves on 30 shots. Brendan Burke
provided the Knights with
consistent goaltending
throughout the game making 23
saves on 26 shots.
Game two of
the home/home series is today
(Sat Jan 2) at the SSEC with a
7:05 puck drop.
