Strathroy, ON - After a terrible performance against
St. Marys Thursday night in which Coach Dan Rose
laid into his team for their poor performance, the
Sarnia Legionnaires were able to turn things around
and end 2011 with a victory, defeating the Strathroy
Rockets 7-5.
But it was
almost all for not, after the Legionnaires held a
5-2 lead midway through the third period after a
Jesse Drydak goal the Rockets would respond with
three goals in a minute and 21 seconds to tie the
game at 5-5. Chase Thornton scored his second goal
of the night on the power play, followed by Tyler
Coleman and 16 seconds later Ryan Field.
Much like
Thursday night, the Legionnaires would take the lead
after Tyler Prong scored, and headed into the final
minute of play with a pulled goalie at the other
end. Only this time Brent Sauve was able to score on
the open net to seal the victory for Sarnia 7-5.
It was the
second time in the last two nights the Legionnaires
blew a lead in the third period.
Things
started off on the wrong end as Chase Thornton
scored his first of the night 1:30 into the game.
Sarnia would escape the first with the lead after
Shawn Waldie tied it at 1-1, and Tyler Cicchini
scored 14 seconds later for the 2-1 lead.
Nick Boyer
would tie the game in the early second, but the
goals continued to come fast as Jason Teschke put
Sarnia back in front 28 seconds later. Cicchini
would pick up his second of the game, as Sarnia lead
4-2 heading into the third. Kyle Washer made 19
saves in the second period, as the Rockets outshot
Sarnia 20-10, and he would go on to make 38 saves in
total over the course of the game.
The
victory puts Sarnia two points ahead of the London
Nationals in the Western Conference heading into the
Christmas break, while Sarnia also has 1 game in
hand against the Nationals The two teams will meet
on Thursday, January 5th as the first game back for
the Legionnaires in 2012.
