Sarnia, ON -
The Red Caravan edged out the Green Caravan 2-1 in
the Novice finals of the 11th annual Tim Horton's
House League Tournament Wednesday afternoon at the
Clearwater Arena.
To open
the first, the Red Caravan had the early chance, but
Mitchell Clarke came up with a big stop on the
breakaway to keep the game tied. Back the other way,
Green would get their own chance on net, but Kevin
Nguyen would get across the crease quick enough to
make a stop keeping it scoreless.
With the
period coming close to an end, Red Caravan would get
on the board. Kevin Grey would get the puck in the
slot and put a wrist shot on net that got past
Clarke to make it a 1-0 game after the first.
In the
second, Green would get two chances to tie the game
but Nguyen would come big twice. Aaron Smith would
be stopped on a breakaway and Ewan Morrison would be
stopped on a shot as well.
Those
chances missed would prove costly, as Red Caravan
would capitalize on a turnover in the Green zone, as
Coltin Mitchell put a low shot on net that bear
Clarke for the 2-0 red lead.
Green
would be able to cut into the lead, as Morrison who
was stopped earlier would get a second chance in the
slot, and his shot would just get past Nguyen to
make it a one goal game after two periods of play.
In the
third, Clarke would come up with a big save for his
team while down on a 5-on-3 powerplay, as Red rushed
three players to the net, but Clarke came up with
the puck. Green would have a few chances on the
penalty kill despite being two men down, but penalty
troubled hampered them from getting back on the
attack.
Aaron
Smith would have the best chance for Green to tie
the game, but would flip the puck over the net
despite having lots of time alone in front.
Green
would pull their goalie but would not be able to
find the equalizer, as Red Caravan went on to the
2-1 victory, winning the Novice Championship.
