Blackhawks Bantams recover from loss

DECEMBER 18,  2011

Third Period Penalties Hurt Blackhawks

On Saturday the Point Edward Bantams travelled to Lambton Shores Forest Arena to play the Predators in Lambton- Middlesex league action and took a 4-2 loss in their second loss of the season.

Being their first meeting of the season, both teams came out a bit slow and the bigger ice surface caught the Hawks a bit off guard. Neither team had any good scoring chances as the defense seemed to control the play. The first period ended 0-0.

McGugan got things going early in the period with the help of Gilroy with a couple of goals within 30 seconds of each other. The first came on a face-off in the Predators end with Gilroy passing to an open McGugan who took a quick wrist shot over the Predators goaltenders glove. Immediately after the center ice puck drop, the Hawks entered the Predators zone and McGugan took another wrist shot between the circles making it 2-0 with assists going to Wilkinson and Gilroy. Play was pretty even until the 4 minute mark of the period when the Predators scored to close the gap to 1 goal going into the third.

The third period saw the Hawks let the Predators take control of the game. The Point got an early penalty and Lambton Shores capitalized on the man-advantage to tie the game at 2-2. Mid-way through the period, the Predators took the lead and this was the turning point for the Hawks which saw them lose their composure. In the last few minutes of the game as they attempted to tie the game, they received a series of penalties that eliminated their chances of tying the game and the Predators were able to add a fourth goal to seal their fate and end it 4-2.

Point Bantams Recover From Loss With an 8-1 Win

On Sunday the Point Edward Bantam Blackhawks hosted the Parkhill Stars at the Point Edward Memorial Arena and gave the home crowd a great 8-1 show.

The first period saw both teams in the box which affected any chances of either team getting any flow going as seven penalties were assessed. Just as the period ended, McGugan got things going by jamming the puck into the net during a scramble in front of the Stars net and giving the Hawks a 1-0 lead going into the second.

The second period saw the Hawks take control of the game with a majority of the play being in the Stars zone. It didn’t take the Point much time to extend their lead when McMichael took a shot from the blueline and Smith tipped it in. The Stars managed to retaliate to keep the game close at 2-1 but by the mid-point of the period the Hawks took back their two goal lead when Smith took a shot and Marr getting the rebound and put it around the goalie to make it 3-1. McMichael got into the action as the period was ending with a slapper from the blueline that beat the Stars goalie to give the Point a comfortable 4-1 lead into the third.

After killing seven penalties in the first two periods, the Stars were winded and losing their ability to get back into the game. The Point controlled the play and by the end of the period had scored four unanswered goals by McMichael(2), Taylor, Smith(2) and Saint to end it 8-1.
