Sarnia, ON - The Sarnia Lady Jr. Sting are the 2012 Sarnia Girl's Silver Stick Midget A champions after a 3-2 victory over the Oakville Hornets Sunday afternoon at the Clearwater Arena.
"Our girls battled hard beginning to end," said Lady Sting Coach John Baker. "We knew we had to get out to an early lead against them to be able to carry the play."

Sarnia opened a quick 2-0 lead on the Hornets in the first period scoring 49 seconds apart. Jenelle Labadie stick handled through the Hornets zone and got a shot on net that beat a screened goalie to open the scoring. Allison Lawrence would add the second goal of the period, getting a pass from behind the net from Chantal Caraher to put the Lady Sting up by two through the first period of play.

Sarnia would get their third goal of the game on the power play as Megan Brinksman would put in a goal at the side of the net, giving Sarnia a three goal lead heading into the final period.

Jordan Henry would play a strong game for the Sting, stopping all shots she faced. In the third she would tested often as Oakville looked to get back into the game. Sarah Kozma would crash the net and put in a goal past Henry to start to chip away at the lead.

With time winding down, Evelyn Guay would put a wrist shot high on Henry, beating the goalie and bringing the Hornets to within one.

WIth a pulled goalie and extra attacker, the Hornets almost had the tying goal but Henry stood strong on her line, keeping the puck out. Sarnia would clear it from the zone and time would expire, giving Sarnia a 3-2 victory and the Midget A championship.

"We battled adversary all season long," said Baker. "We have been short most of the year and in the last month we are getting everyone back. And we are really starting to come together as a team and it really showed this weekend."

The Midget A Sting are the second Sarnia team to win the tournament over the weekend, winning it on home ice.

"It is always something special to win your own tournament," said Baker. "And being Silver Stick is that much better. It's kind of hard to put into words how good it feels."
