andrew brethauer February 5th, 2012

Sarnia, ON - The Petrolia Oilers are the 2012 Midget B Silver Stick Champions after defeating the Chatsworth Rebels 2-0 in the finals at the Clearwater Arena Sunday afternoon.

"We played a good game and everyone played hard," said Oilers coach Julie Vandersteen. "The girls came prepared, they came to win. They were not going to go home without the Silver Stick."

Kimberly Poole opened the scoring just a minute fifteen into the opening period to give Petrolia a 1-0 lead, in what would be the eventual game winner.

Kaitlyn Sinclair would add a second goal in the second period after picking up a rebound off a Kendra Steadman shot from the blue line.

That would be all the Oilers would need as goalie Amelia Maniuk would play solid throughout the game, making key saves to preserve the shutout for the Oilers.

Petrolia is the third local team to win a Silver Stick champions this year, and they got to play in front of their hometown in round robin games, and finish off the tournament with local support.

"Silver Stick means a lot in this area," said Vandersteen. "Silver Stick and our provincials were our goals this year. It meant a lot to win this for sure."

Petrolia was a perfect 3-0 in the round robin games, defeating Kitchener 2-0, Brampton 7-0, and Lucan 4-2. They defeated St. Clair 2-0 in the quarter finals and Grey Highlands 5-2 in the semi-finals to get into the championship game.

Chatsworth went 2-1 in the round robin game, defeating North Halton 2-0 and Lambton Shores 5-1, but lost to West Seneca 3-2. They defeated Walkerton 4-2 in the quarter finals, and defeated Mt. Brydges 3-2 in the semi-finals.
