The Sarnia Sting Minor Midget A/AA Hockey Team
participated in the West London
Byron
Optimist Cup Tournament February 3rd-5th and came
away as the Minor Midget Champions.
The Sting
entered the weekend missing three key players with
Ben Garrett, Devin VanHoorn and Riley Taylor all out
due to injuries.
On Friday
the Sting played league rivals London West, beating
them 3-2 and then beating Cambridge Hawks 3-1 on
Friday night. On Saturday the Sting played two
Toronto area teams beating the West Mall Lightning
(Mississauga) 4-0 and beating the Ted Reeve Thunder
4-2 in a penalty filled game.
In the
final game Sunday Night at 5pm, Sarnia went down 1-0
early in their rematch against West London but
battled back to tie the game 1-1 on a goal from
Brent Blais. Sarnia would go up 2-1 when Dean
MacEachern scored on the power play. West London
tied the game in the second at 2-2 but Sarnia took
control with goals from Kraig Durco and Jeff Brown
for a 4-2 final and the Tournament Championship.
Cole
Thomas and Steve Taylor split the goaltending duties
allowing only 7 goals in 5 games while the Sting
scored 19. James Pavey lead the way with 8 points,
followed by Kraig Durco and Curtis Lindsay with 6
pts, Dean MacEachern and Ryan Lyle with 5pts, Taylor
Janzen with 4, Brent Blais and Jeffrey Brown with 3
pts, Jon McGuire with 2 and Calvin Hughson and Kevin
Dann with 1 pt each.
